About Karla

Karla Heaman is a nurse attorney at McKeen & Associates. Karla works behind the scenes at McKeen & Associates, investigating the viability of cases, with a focus on birth trauma cases. Karla joined McKeen & Associates in 2014, after 19 years practicing as a registered nurse at a major hospital system in southeastern Michigan. Her experience as a surgical nurse for GI and organ transplant surgery, as well as in the neonatal intensive care unit, has provided her with invaluable insight that is beneficial to the firm. With her medical and legal expertise, Karla provides theories of negligence in cases presented to her for review and then works with expert witnesses. Her deep connections with medical experts has proven an instrumental element in the successful outcome of cases. Karla earned her law degree from Wayne State School of Law and her Bachelor of Science Nursing from Cedarville University. She is a member of the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants (AALNC) and The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TAANA). When she is not practicing law, Karla enjoys reading non-fiction and is active outdoors with her family and dog, especially at their lake house in Alpena.
