About Stephen

Stephen New is a native of Gilbert, West Virginia, practicing law in Beckley. He graduated from Marshall University in 1994 with a B.A. in Political Science and from West Virginia University College of Law in 1998. He served in the West Virginia Army National Guard, retiring as a Major in 2009. He was Chief Justice of the Moot Court Board and a member of the Lugar Trial Association at WVU. He clerked for the Raleigh County Circuit Judges. He started his own office in May 2004, focusing on personal injury, wrongful death, and employment discrimination, having tried 55 cases to jury verdict. He is licensed in all courts in West Virginia, United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of West Virginia, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. He served as President of the West Virginia Association for Justice (2018-2019) and is a Board Member. He is also active in the American Association for Justice, where he was a Board Member for the New Lawyers Division (2012-2013). He has handled prominent class actions, mass environmental damage cases, and cases involving the Beckley VA Medical Center and the state’s jail system. He was part of the "Opioid Justice Team" in 2017. He received the West Virginia University College of Law and West Virginia Executive Magazine Lawyers & Leaders Award in 2018 and was recognized as a Super Lawyer from 2016-2019.
