About Tyler

Tyler Smith is a partner at Libby O’Brien Kingsley & Champion, where he has represented clients in civil and criminal matters since joining as an associate in 2012, rising to partner in 2018. He maintains a diverse litigation practice spanning criminal defense, employment law, civil litigation, and appellate advocacy. Tyler gained expertise in operating under the influence cases by completing the NHTSA DWI Detection and Field Sobriety Testing course-the same training used by law enforcement-to better challenge OUI evidence. He has obtained acquittals in felony and misdemeanor criminal cases, and achieved other successful dispositions through pretrial motions and negotiation. He has tried major felony cases in state and federal court which have included charges such as aggravated assault, Hobbs Act robbery, and other charges. Active on the appellate stage, Tyler was appointed in 2024 to the Maine Supreme Judicial Court’s Advisory Committee on Appellate Procedure. He has argued before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court and the First Circuit on numerous occasions, and authored amicus briefs for the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers supporting OUI defense. In addition to criminal defense and appellate advocacy, Tyler maintains an active civil litigation practice, representing individuals, businesses, and professionals in state and federal courts. He has litigated cases involving wrongful termination, workplace discrimination, wage and hour disputes, defamation, municipal liability, and whistleblower claims. His experience on both sides of employment matters allows him to anticipate opposing strategies and deliver practical, results-driven counsel. Tyler lives in Hollis with his wife and two children, and his two dogs. He enjoys skiing, running, and playing guitar.
