Medical device maker Johnson & Johnson was ordered to pay damages to 5 patients over flawed artificial hip devices (Pinnacle brand) that prematurely failed. A federal-court jury found company officials aware of flaws but failed to warn.

Award included $142 million in actual damages and $360 million in punitive damages. J&J had previously settled ASR hip lawsuits for $2.5 billion in 2013. J&J intends to appeal.
