Case Details
Two young children (8 and 10) severely injured after falling from cliffs at a church picnic. They were left unattended and trapped by rising tide. One child paralyzed, the other with brain damage and PTSD. Church elders were found grossly negligent.

Settled for $20,000,000 on the first day of trial. Highest award in Santa Barbara County at the time. Church elders tried to coerce parents to drop lawsuit. Church had same duty as a school teacher to oversee children. Negligent in allowing children to wander unattended and not familiarizing with tidal conditions.
