Larry Lozano, an 18-wheeler driver, fell asleep at the wheel due to being forced by his employers (Jorge and Sylvia Marin and their companies) to falsify log books and drive beyond legal hours. Despite being exhausted and out of hours, he was compelled to take another load to the east coast, fearing termination due to having a special needs son and being the sole breadwinner. Fatigue led to a crash, causing him significant permanent injuries. A jury awarded Larry and his wife Irene $80 million in actual and punitive damages.

Case name: Lozano v. JNM Express, L.L.C. #1 Gross Negligence Verdict in Texas in 2019. Judgment was upheld by the court of appeals. Now pending at the Texas Supreme Court.
