The defendants made no offer to settle the case before trial. The jury awarded $8.9 million, which with prejudgment interest totaled just over $10 million. Patient Derek Windsor, then 34, went to Rush Copley Medical Center on Nov. 15, 2016. CT scan allegedly showed gas under the skin, but was interpreted as cellulitis.
