Discrimination, Employment Litigation
Katie Brenny was hired by the University of Minnesota to serve as the associate head coach of its women’s golf program. After only a week on the job, Katie was prohibited by the Director of Golf from instructing the women golfers, traveling with the team to tournaments or even talking about golf technique. Instead, she was assigned a variety of menial tasks. Following the trial, the court concluded that Katie had been discriminated against based on her sexual orientation.
Defamation, Constitutional Law, Employment Litigation
The Minnesota Supreme Court issued a favorable decision for FMJ client, Nathan McGuire. The Court held that a high school basketball coach is not a “public figure” under the First Amendment, and, therefore, could bring a defamation lawsuit against parents who had defamed him. The decision reinstated McGuire’s defamation lawsuits against one of the parents. Ultimately, the team secured a settlement in favor of the coach.
Aviation Litigation, Constitutional Law, Immunity
FMJ served as lead counsel for Air Wisconsin through trial and the Colorado state courts of appeal, and then served as co-counsel before the U.S. Supreme Court, where we favorably secured a 9-0 decision holding that our client was immune from liability under the Aviation Transportation Security Act.
Personal Injury, Aviation Litigation
Defense verdict on behalf of a major U.S. airline in a claim brought by a passenger seeking more than $5 million in damages related to an alleged traumatic brain injury when struck by a beverage cart on a flight.
Civil Rights Litigation, Aviation Litigation
Successfully represented a major U.S. airline in federal civil rights litigation initiated by passengers who alleged that company equipment and baggage policies discriminated against individuals with disabilities.
