Child Sexual Abuse

The Carrillo Law Firm represented over 26 children against the Los Angeles Unified School District in the case involving Mark Berndt, an elementary school teacher at Miramonte Elementary School in South Los Angeles, CA who had been sexually abusing children. In a heavily litigated case against the LAUSD, the Carrillo Law Firm, along with two other law firms, secured a record $139.5 million to settle approximately 82 claims against the school district. This was the largest settlement ever recorded against a school district in the country for the sexual abuse of minors.

Child Sexual Abuse

In another high-profile sex abuse case against the Los Angeles Unified School District, the Carrillo Law Firm was able to secure a huge settlement against the District for the sexual abuse of children by one of their teachers at a Wilmington school. Robert Pimentel, who worked at George De La Torre Elementary School in Wilmington, was arrested and was found guilty of sexually abusing girls between 2002-2012. The LAUSD denied any wrongdoing and litigated the case against the children until they finally reached a settlement with the students. The Carrillo Law Firm represented 3 of the sexually abused children and along with the Manly, Stewart and Finaldi firm were able to secure another record settlement against the LAUSD.

Civil Rights, Wrongful Death, Police Misconduct

This case stems from the excessive use of force by California Highway Patrol officers based out of the Altadena CHP Station. Edward Bronstein was held in a prone position by officers while a blood draw was attempted, despite his cries of 'I can't breathe!', leading to his death by asphyxia. This litigation resulted in the second largest pre-trial civil rights death settlement in the country, of $24 million, behind only the George Floyd incident.

Child Sexual Abuse

14 Victims of Lino Cabrera filed their lawsuit against the LAUSD for negligence after being sexually abused at Oxnard Street Elementary School. Lino Cabrera, a teacher’s assistant and computer tech, molested multiple children on campus. He was convicted in 2020 for child sexual abuse. A full settlement for $19.99 million was reached on the eve of trial for all 14 victims against the LAUSD.

Wrongful Death, School Negligence

The Carrillo Law Firm represented the family of Moises Murillo, an 8-year-old child with Down syndrome, who died while in the care of Hacienda La Puente Unified School District employees. He was removed from his adaptive stroller, tied to a school chair, and left unsupervised, leading to a fall that fractured his spinal cord and caused his death. An $18 million settlement was secured against the school district one week before a trial was set to start.
