Sturgis, SD

Michael Strain is recognized as one of South Dakota’s outstanding trial lawyers. He was selected as South Dakota Trial Lawyer of the Year in 1995 and labeled a “Super Lawyer” by Great Plains Super Lawyers Magazine. He has tried over 100 cases to verdict, focusing on business litigation, civil rights, personal injury, medical malpractice, and criminal law. He obtained his law degree from the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, and clerked for the Eighth Judicial Circuit, State of South Dakota. He is a member of the South Dakota Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association for Justice, and is licensed to practice law in South Dakota and Wyoming. He is also a staff member for Gerry Spence’s Trial Lawyers College.

Matthew J. Kinney

Attorney Matt Kinney's trial experience began in 1995. He specializes in all forms of criminal law, including appellate cases, real estate transactions, business and corporate organization, probate and estate planning. Matt is licensed to practice law in the state of South Dakota and the United States District Court. He has received an AV Preeminent rating by Martindale-Hubbell and is a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the South Dakota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers organizations.

Dale L. Morman was a founding partner of the Morman Law Firm, born in Crofton, Nebraska, in April 1927. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree and Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of South Dakota in 1954 and was admitted to the South Dakota State Bar. He served as Stanley County State’s Attorney (1955) and Sturgis City Attorney (1965-1966). He was known as a preeminent estate planner, probate attorney, corporate law, and trial lawyer. He passed away on May 21, 2009.

Kim Kinney

Kim Kinney specializes in both family law and criminal law. She joined Kinney Law in 2014 as an associate attorney. She obtained her J.D. Degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 2013. Kim is a member of the State Bar of South Dakota and serves as the Fourth Circuit Representative on the Young Lawyers Board of Directors.

Keith R. Smit practiced law in Sturgis for over 43 years. He was born in Alta, Iowa, in June 1941. He attended the University of South Dakota, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1964 and his Juris Doctor in 1967. He was admitted to the South Dakota State Bar in 1967. He was considered one of the preeminent corporate and probate attorneys in South Dakota. He was actively involved in the community and held the position of Sturgis City Attorney on numerous occasions. He passed away in 2021.

Ryan Walno

Ryan Walno joined Kinney Law as an Associate Attorney in May 2023, practicing criminal law. He graduated from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law in 2022 with a Juris Doctor and from the University of Michigan in 2019 with a B.A. in Political Science and History. He is admitted to the South Dakota Bar.
