When Crashes Happen

The temporal patterns of fatal crashes showed strong consistency between the two periods. Saturday was the peak day for fatal crashes in both 2012 (172 crashes) and 2011 (179 crashes). Road & Environmental Conditions

Lighting conditions associated with fatal crashes saw a significant shift in classification year-over-year, while weather conditions remained more stable. In 2012, 260 fatal crashes occurred in 'Dark - Not Lighted' conditions, a dramatic increase from only 20 in 2011; conversely, fatal crashes in 'Dark - Lighted' areas decreased from 338 to 108. Fatal crashes in clear weather were predominant in both years but decreased from 608 to 555, while crashes in rainy conditions increased from 59 to 77.

The makes of vehicles involved in fatal crashes remained consistent between the two periods. In both 2012 and 2011, the top three makes were Chevrolet (198 and 206 vehicles, respectively), Ford (183 and 188 vehicles), and Toyota (103 and 98 vehicles). Speed Limit Zones

Manner of Collision

The most frequent manner of collision in both periods was 'Not a Collision with Motor Vehicle In-Transport,' which typically includes single-vehicle events like rollovers or impacts with fixed objects. This category accounted for 495 fatal crashes in 2012 and 492 in 2011, representing over 60% of all fatal crashes in both years. Angle collisions were the second most common type, decreasing from 154 incidents in the prior year to 138 in the current year.

Four-door sedans were the leading category in both periods, increasing from 373 in 2011 to 385 in 2012. Rural vs Urban

Fatal crashes occurred more frequently in rural areas than in urban areas in both periods, highlighting the risks associated with rural roadways. In 2012, there were 473 fatal crashes on rural roads and 333 on urban roads, compared to 462 rural and 347 urban in 2011.
