When Crashes Happen

The timing of fatal crashes shifted year-over-year. In 2020, the peak days for fatal crashes were Tuesday and Saturday, each with 11 incidents. Road & Environmental Conditions

In both 2020 and 2019, the majority of fatal crashes occurred in Clear weather (25 and 33 crashes, respectively) and during Daylight hours (29 and 30 crashes, respectively). The number of fatal crashes in snowy conditions remained relatively stable, with 7 in 2020 compared to 8 in 2019. Vehicles & Demographics

Speed Limit Zones

There was a shift in the speed zones where fatal crashes occurred. Crashes in 45 mph zones more than doubled, increasing from 6 in 2019 to 14 in 2020. Conversely, fatal crashes in 50 mph zones saw a significant decrease from 12 in 2019 to just 4 in 2020. Crashes in 55 mph zones, the most common speed zone for fatal incidents in both years, decreased slightly from 20 to 18.

Manner of Collision

The most common manner of collision in both periods was a single-vehicle crash where the first harmful event was not a collision with another motor vehicle, accounting for 30 of 53 fatal crashes (56.6%) in 2020 and 37 of 62 (59.7%) in 2019. Front-to-front collisions remained stable with 11 incidents in both years. Angle collisions, however, saw a decrease from 13 in 2019 to 8 in 2020.

Rural vs Urban

Fatal crashes occurred more frequently in rural areas in both years. In 2020, there were 29 fatal crashes on rural roads and 24 on urban roads. This is a slight decrease from 2019, which saw 33 rural and 28 urban fatal crashes, but maintains the trend of rural roads having a higher share of fatal incidents.

Roadway Functional Class

The distribution of fatal crashes by road class shifted between periods. In 2020, Interstates saw the most fatal crashes with 19, an increase from 15 in 2019. Conversely, fatal crashes on Principal Arterials dropped significantly from 25 in 2019 to 11 in 2020. Fatal crashes on local and collector roads combined were 15 in 2020, down from 16 in 2019.

Drivers were the largest group of individuals involved in fatal crashes, though their numbers decreased from 89 in 2019 to 80 in 2020. The number of passengers involved increased from 47 to 57. Most notably, the number of pedestrians involved more than doubled, rising from 6 in 2019 to 13 in 2020, while bicyclists involved remained stable at 3 in 2020 versus 2 in 2019.

In 2020, out of 153 people involved in fatal crashes, 64 suffered fatal injuries, 23 had serious injuries, and 30 had no injuries. This compares to 2019, where of 147 people involved, 67 were fatally injured, 29 had serious injuries, and 21 were uninjured. The total number of fatalities and serious injuries both saw a decrease year-over-year.
