When Crashes Happen

The temporal patterns of crashes shifted between April 2023 and April 2024. The peak day for crashes moved from Friday (619 crashes) in the prior year to Tuesday (702 crashes) in the current period. Similarly, the peak hour shifted one hour earlier, from 4 p.m. in 2023 (347 crashes) to 3 p.m. in 2024 (368 crashes). Crashes on Monday and Tuesday increased significantly, while weekend crash counts on Saturday and Sunday declined.

Crash Severity Breakdown

Crash severity decreased year-over-year. The number of fatal crashes fell from 24 in April 2023 to 18 in April 2024, and their share of all crashes dropped from 0.6% to 0.5%. Serious injury crashes also declined from 96 to 79. Top Contributing Factors

The ranking of top contributing factors shifted between the two periods. Collisions involving an "Animal" became the leading factor in April 2024 with 447 incidents, an increase of 57 crashes (a 14.6% rise in count) from 390 in the prior year. "Followed too close," the top factor in 2023 with 439 crashes, dropped to the second position with 426 crashes in 2024. Notably, crashes attributed to "Driving too fast for conditions" saw a 55.8% increase in count, rising from 86 to 134 incidents year-over-year.

Road & Environmental Conditions

Crashes in adverse weather conditions increased notably in April 2024 compared to the previous year. The number of crashes occurring in rain more than tripled, from 113 to 351, and their share of total crashes rose from 3.0% to 9.0%. Correspondingly, collisions on wet road surfaces saw a significant jump from 254 to 635 incidents. The majority of crashes in both periods occurred in daylight and on dry roads, though the share of dry road crashes fell from 80.8% to 71.0%.

Vehicles & Demographics

The composition of vehicles involved in crashes remained stable year-over-year. Ford and Chevrolet (including its abbreviation "CHEV") were the top two makes involved in collisions in both April 2023 and April 2024, with both seeing an increase in their total counts. The top five rankings, which also include Toyota, Jeep, and Honda, were largely unchanged. Similarly, the age distribution of persons involved in crashes showed minimal change, with the 26-34 age group consistently representing the largest share in both periods.

All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.
