Top Contributing Factors
The top contributing factors remained largely consistent year-over-year, though their order and counts shifted. In April 2025, 'Followed too close' was the leading factor with 410 crashes, a decrease from 426 in the prior year. 'Animal' related incidents, the top factor in April 2024 with 447 crashes, dropped by 13.0% in count to 389 crashes, making it the second-leading factor in the current period. Vehicles & Demographics
The makes of vehicles involved in crashes remained consistent, with Ford and Chevrolet being the most common in both periods, followed by Toyota. The number of vehicles from these top makes involved in crashes decreased, in line with the overall reduction in incidents. Analysis of persons involved shows a decrease in crash participation across most adult age groups, most notably for the 26-34 age bracket (from 1,116 to 971 persons) and the 21-25 age bracket (from 734 to 648 persons). The number of persons in the 16-20 age group remained nearly unchanged.

All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.

- AI commentary: Narrative sections are generated by Google Gemini (large language model) based on the structured data. Commentary is descriptive, not predictive, and should not be interpreted as expert opinion.

- Only crashes reported to and documented by law enforcement are included. Minor incidents, unreported crashes, and near-misses are not captured in this dataset.

- Open data portal records may experience a publication lag - recently occurring crashes may not yet appear in the dataset at the time of report generation.
