When Crashes Happen
The temporal patterns of crashes shifted between the two periods. In February 2016, the peak day for crashes was Monday with 777 incidents, a change from the previous year's peak on Wednesday which saw 913 incidents. The peak hour for crashes also moved from the 4 p.m. hour in 2015 (379 crashes) to the 7 a.m. morning commute hour in 2016 (343 crashes).

Crash Severity Breakdown
The number of fatal crashes was identical in both periods at 16, with the fatal crash rate remaining stable at approximately 0.4% of all crashes. However, the proportion of crashes resulting in an injury (serious, minor, or possible) increased, accounting for 25.7% of all crashes in February 2016, up from 23.4% in February 2015. Top Contributing Factors
While "Driving too fast for conditions" remained the leading contributing factor in both periods, its count decreased by 9.8% from 572 to 516 crashes. Other top factors saw notable increases in crash counts, including incidents involving an "Animal" (up 35.9% from 276 to 375), "Lost Control" (up 30.1% from 269 to 350), and "Ran off road - left" (up 14.5% from 351 to 402). Conversely, crashes due to "FTYROW: From stop sign" decreased by 12.4% from 259 to 227.

Road & Environmental Conditions
The distribution of crashes by environmental conditions showed notable shifts year-over-year. In February 2016, a smaller share of crashes occurred in clear weather (42.0% vs. 54.9% in 2015) and on snow-covered roads (18.5% vs. 26.0% in 2015). Conversely, the proportion of crashes on dry roads grew from 42.6% to 48.2%, and the share during cloudy weather increased from 20.9% to 29.3%. The proportion of crashes happening in daylight decreased from 66.3% to 61.5%.

Vehicles & Demographics
The makes of vehicles and demographics of persons involved in crashes remained largely consistent year-over-year. After consolidating name variations, Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge, and Toyota were the top four makes in both February 2015 and February 2016, with minimal changes in their rankings or counts. The age distribution of persons involved also showed stability; the 26-34 age group was the largest cohort in both periods, representing 15.7% of persons in 2016 compared to 16.7% in 2015.

All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.

- Demographics: Age and sex distributions are drawn from person-level records linked to each crash event. A single crash may involve multiple persons.
- Vehicle data: Make information is drawn from vehicle unit records linked to each crash event.
- AI commentary: Narrative sections are generated by Google Gemini (large language model) based on the structured data. Commentary is descriptive, not predictive, and should not be interpreted as expert opinion.

- Only crashes reported to and documented by law enforcement are included. Minor incidents, unreported crashes, and near-misses are not captured in this dataset.
- Data reflects conditions at the time of the initial police report and may be subject to subsequent corrections, reclassifications, or supplements by the reporting agency.
- Open data portal records may experience a publication lag - recently occurring crashes may not yet appear in the dataset at the time of report generation.
