When Crashes Happen
The temporal patterns of crashes remained largely consistent year-over-year. Friday was the peak day for crashes in both July 2016 (759 crashes) and July 2015 (806 crashes). Similarly, the 4 p.m. hour was the peak hour in both periods, with 327 crashes in 2016 and 365 in 2015. While most days saw a decrease in crashes, Sunday collisions increased from 422 to 486.

Crash Severity Breakdown
While the total number of fatal crashes remained unchanged at 30 for both July 2016 and July 2015, the number of people killed in those crashes rose from 34 to 38. Top Contributing Factors
The top contributing factors for crashes were similar in both periods, with 'Followed too close' ranking first in July 2016 (526 crashes) and July 2015 (538 crashes). Crashes involving animals, the second-ranked factor, saw a significant 21% decrease in count from 485 to 383 year-over-year. Conversely, crashes where 'Exceeded authorized speed' was a factor increased in count by 65%, from 40 incidents in 2015 to 66 in 2016. 'Ran off road - left' also saw an increase in count from 197 to 222.

Road & Environmental Conditions
The vast majority of crashes in both periods occurred in clear weather and on dry roads. In July 2016, the proportion of crashes on dry roads increased to 82.0% from 79.2% the previous year. Correspondingly, crashes during rainy conditions saw a notable decrease, falling from 309 incidents in July 2015 to 164 in July 2016. Lighting conditions remained stable, with daylight crashes accounting for approximately 73.5% of all incidents in both years.

Vehicles & Demographics
The makes of vehicles involved in crashes remained consistent, with Chevrolet and Ford being the top two in both July 2016 and July 2015. The total number of vehicles involved in crashes decreased from 7,538 to 7,051, in line with the overall trend. An analysis of persons involved shows a decrease in count across all age groups. Notably, the proportion of persons aged 65 and older involved in crashes decreased from 11.3% of the total in 2015 to 9.9% in 2016.

All crash data in this report is sourced from Iowa Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the ArcGIS Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.

- Only crashes reported to and documented by law enforcement are included. Minor incidents, unreported crashes, and near-misses are not captured in this dataset.
- Data reflects conditions at the time of the initial police report and may be subject to subsequent corrections, reclassifications, or supplements by the reporting agency.
- Open data portal records may experience a publication lag - recently occurring crashes may not yet appear in the dataset at the time of report generation.
