When Crashes Happen

The peak day for fatal crashes shifted from Thursday in September 2022, which had 23 fatal crashes, to Saturday in September 2023, with 17 fatal crashes. The peak hour for fatal crashes also shifted, from 7 PM (10 fatal crashes) in the prior period to 8 PM (9 fatal crashes) in the current period.

Clear weather conditions remained the most common factor, with 75 fatal crashes in September 2023 compared to 74 in September 2022. Vehicles & Demographics

Chevrolet vehicles involved in fatal crashes decreased slightly from 31 in September 2022 to 30 in September 2023. Ford vehicles also saw a decrease, from 26 to 23. Harley-Davidson vehicles involved in fatal crashes increased from 11 in the prior period to 16 in the current period.

Speed Limit Zones

Fatal crashes in the 55 mph speed zone decreased from 49 in September 2022 to 36 in September 2023. Crashes in the 45 mph zone decreased from 14 to 11. Conversely, crashes in the 35 mph zone increased from 8 to 11.

Manner of Collision

The dominant manner of collision in both periods was "The First Harmful Event was Not a Collision with a Motor Vehicle in Transport," decreasing from 60 fatal crashes (55%) in September 2022 to 51 fatal crashes (54.3%) in September 2023. Angle collisions decreased from 30 (27.5%) to 20 (21.3%). Front-to-Front collisions increased from 5 (4.6%) to 11 (11.7%).

Rural vs Urban

In September 2023, 58 fatal crashes occurred in urban areas and 34 in rural areas. This represents a decrease from September 2022, when there were 63 urban fatal crashes and 46 rural fatal crashes. The proportion of rural fatal crashes decreased from approximately 42.2% to 36.9% year-over-year.

In September 2023, County Highway Agencies were associated with the highest number of fatal crashes at 42, a slight decrease from 43 in the prior period. Drivers remained the most common person type involved in fatal crashes, though their count decreased from 172 in September 2022 to 145 in September 2023. The number of pedestrians involved in fatal crashes doubled from 10 to 20. The number of passengers involved remained stable at 56 in both periods.

Person Injury Severity

The number of fatal injuries (K) decreased from 113 in September 2022 to 102 in September 2023. Serious injuries (A) remained stable at 22 in the current period compared to 23 in the prior period. Minor injuries (B) decreased from 21 to 17, while possible injuries (C) increased from 18 to 21.
