The peak day for fatal crashes remained Saturday in both periods, with 28 fatal crashes in 2023 compared to 23 in 2022. However, the peak hour for fatal crashes shifted from 11 AM in 2022 (12 crashes) to 6 PM in 2023 (11 crashes).

Speed Limit Zones

Fatal crashes in 70 mph speed zones remained the most common, increasing slightly from 32 in 2022 to 34 in 2023. Crashes in 55 mph zones saw a notable increase from 11 to 16, while those in 80 mph zones decreased from 18 to 15. Fatal crashes in 65 mph zones also declined, from 16 to 12.

Manner of Collision

The dominant manner of collision in fatal crashes remained 'The First Harmful Event was Not a Collision with a Motor Vehicle in Transport', accounting for 78 crashes in 2023, a decrease from 81 in 2022. However, front-to-front collisions increased significantly from 12 to 20, and angle collisions also rose from 13 to 17. Conversely, front-to-rear collisions decreased from 8 to 3.

Rural vs Urban

In 2023, the majority of fatal crashes, 94 out of 121, occurred in rural areas, though this was a decrease from 103 rural fatal crashes in 2022.
