About A.
A. Barry Cappello, managing partner, is one of the nation’s leading trial lawyers and authorities on complex commercial litigation including lender liability, class actions, catastrophic personal injury matters and environmental litigation. He has challenged the “business as usual” way that financial institutions, government entities and big corporations conduct themselves. He holds them accountable when they ignore the rights of individuals and small businesses. Over the years, Mr. Cappello has obtained verdicts and settlements in excess of $2 billion. He is known as the pioneer of lender liability, the area of law that requires lenders to treat their borrowers fairly and when they don’t, they can be subject to borrower litigation under a variety of legal claims. He authored the 800-page “Lender Liability” (Juris Legal Information), which is recognized in the industry as the first and leading treatise on the subject. He has been lead trial counsel in multiple class action lawsuits filed against Plains All American and its successors, stemming from a May 2015 oil pipeline rupture and the resulting oil spill. He also brought a lawsuit against the City of Santa Barbara for violating the California Voting Rights Act. Before private practice, he served as City Attorney of Santa Barbara, chief litigator against Union Oil, Mobil, Gulf and Texaco for the 1969 Santa Barbara Channel oil spill. He was Assistant District Attorney in Santa Barbara County and Deputy Attorney General for the State of California. He has donated over $3 million to UCLA Law, leading to the creation of the A. Barry Cappello Courtroom and the A. Barry Cappello Program in Trial Advocacy, which is rated first in the nation. He was named UCLA School of Law Donor of the Year in 2018.
