About John
John D. Mayne is a native of Sioux City. He is a graduate of Harvard College (1970) and the Drake University Law School, with honors, (1976). He served three years as an officer in the U.S. Navy, including one tour aboard a destroyer in the Vietnam theater. He has been in private practice in Sioux City since 1976, practicing primarily in civil litigation. He has tried dozens of cases to juries in state and federal court throughout Northwest Iowa. His experience includes litigation of many types and representing either plaintiffs or defendants whether in personal injury, commercial, products liability, construction, professional malpractice (attorney, physician, engineer, real estate broker, insurance broker, accountant, title abstractor), aircraft crash, and securities fraud. He is also experienced in probating decedents’ estates and handling real estate title and litigation issues. John has been recognized by his peers with the AV®-Preeminent rating, the highest level of professional excellence, for his professional skills and integrity. John has held a variety of leadership positions in state and local bar associations. He served for six years representing Sioux City lawyers on the Board of Governors of the Iowa State Bar Association. He also served as Chairman of the Federal Practice Committee of the Iowa State Bar Association. John was appointed to serve on the Iowa Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on Rules of Civil Procedure. In 2004, he directed the International Association of Defense Counsel’s (IADC) annual Open Forum on Masters of Trial Advocacy, and the IADC honored him by selecting him to be on the 2005 Faculty of its Trial Academy. He is a Fellow of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers. He is a member of the Iowa Defense Counsel Association. He has been very active in civic affairs, serving on numerous charitable and civic association boards, most notably having been elected to serve on the Sioux City Community School District’s Board of Directors, one year as President. He is a Fellow of the Iowa State Bar Association Foundation. John is an avid semi-professional cellist, performing regularly in the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra. He is also a golfer and hunter.
