About Thomas
Thomas Nelson is a native of the Lowcountry, growing up in West Ashley. He is passionate about music, an avid guitarist, and enjoys recreational boating, spending time with his wife and dogs, and following college and professional football. He is an accomplished Charleston attorney practicing in family law, DUI defense, criminal defense, and personal injury. He emphasizes educating clients about the law and court procedures. Thomas graduated from Bishop England High School in 1995, received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the College of Charleston in 2000, and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 2003. During law school, he worked in the Office of the Attorney General and later in the Elder Care Division. He co-founded an independent law clerk service. He has practiced in various courts, from the South Carolina Supreme Court to the Charleston County Detention Center, representing diverse clients. He has helped form businesses, drafted contracts, filed liens, created wills, cleaned up criminal records, and searched real estate titles. Thomas is recognized as an AV rated attorney by Martindale-Hubbell, named to Super Lawyers Rising Stars in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017, and is a member of the National Trial Lawyers Top 100 Criminal Trial Lawyers and the National College of DUI Defense. AVVO rates him as “Superb” (10 out of 10) in family law, litigation, DUI defense and criminal defense. He is also a published author of legal handbooks including the “South Carolina Deposition Procedure Handbook” and the “South Carolina Implied Consent Handbook,” as well as books for the public on DUI defense and gun laws in South Carolina.
