Case Details

All charges dismissed against former Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office deputy Tai Chan in the shooting death of his partner Jeremy Martin, ending the state’s longest-running murder prosecution. The judge ruled that Chan’s right to a speedy trial had been violated and found prosecutorial misconduct.

Additional Notes

Case dismissed after six years, two mistrials, and numerous delays. Defendant claimed self-defense. Judge Conrad Perea dismissed the case based on violation of speedy trial and due process, and fined the DA for prosecutorial misconduct. John Day was Chan's attorney.
