Sporer v. Global ElevatorTechnologies: An elevator maintenance company agreed to pay for injuries a Union County corrections officer suffered in an accident allegedly caused by poorly maintained brakes.

During a power outage at the county jail on Dec. 23, 2000, the elevator came to an abrupt halt. James Sporer suffered left knee derangement, internal damage to cartilage and ligaments, strained neck, and a herniated disk at L4-L5. Underwent two arthroscopic knee surgeries and lumbar fusion surgery, but not completely successful, leaving Sporer with limited motion and chronic pain, total and permanent disability. Cannot sit or stand for long periods, restricted ability to lift and twist, takes medication, might require future fusion surgery. Global Elevator Technologies had a contract to maintain elevators. Also sued Public Service Electric & Gas. Global was insured by Gulf Insurance Group under a $10 million policy. Reported by Mary P. Gallagher.
