From 2019 to 2020, he co-counseled a class action on behalf of Maine prisoners who were denied treatment for Hepatitis C. Steven J. Mogul

Steven J. Mogul is a member of the firm, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1957. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law in 1983. Steven was admitted to practice before the Maine and U.S. District Court for the District of Maine in 1984 and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in 1999. He has served on the Fee Arbitration Commission of the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar and is a contributing author to several American Bar Association surveys. He has extensive community involvement, including serving with the American Red Cross, Bangor Community Theater, Maine Discovery Museum, Maine Lakes, and the Town of Mariaville Comprehensive Planning Committee. He is currently on the Endowment Committee and Ritual Committee of Congregation Beth Israel, and the Bylaws and Policy Committee of The Penobscot Fly Fishers. He is a member and past president of the Penobscot County Bar Association, a member of the Maine State Bar Association, the Maine Trial Lawyers Association, and the American Association for Justice. John S. Whitman

John is the firm’s senior shareholder and director. He has over 35 years of trial experience in a wide variety of cases in the state and federal courts in Maine and elsewhere in New England. John handles complex commercial and personal injury litigation, legal malpractice defense, products liability cases, and insurance litigation, among other things. He is one of the most accomplished insurance coverage lawyers in the state. He advises insureds and insurers on coverage issues and handles “bad faith” lawsuits against insurers. He is Chair of the Maine Civil Rules Advisory Committee. A short list of John’s cases over the years illustrates the breadth of his experience. Before moving to Maine, John served as Associate Counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee in the impeachment of President Nixon. During his legal career in Maine, he has handled cases involving matters as diverse as murder, ship collisions, lender liability, dam failure, patent infringement and wiretapping. John is listed in “Best Lawyers in America,” New England Super Lawyers,” “Chambers USA,” and “Benchmark Litigation.” John graduated from Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Originally from New York City, John commutes to work in Portland by ferry from Peaks Island where he and his family maintain a fleet of a rowing shell, a sailing dinghy, a Laser, seven sailboards, and a light dory he has rowed offshore as far as Matinicus. He plays hockey twice a week, year round, and recently met Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on a hockey trip to Japan.
