Crash statistics and trends in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek

West Michigan doesn't have one dominant city driving its crash numbers. Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek sit in three separate counties with three separate road networks, and each has its own pattern of trouble spots. Statewide, Michigan logged 288,880 crashes in 2024, one every 1 minute and 49 seconds, and 1,012 of those crashes were fatal, killing 1,099 people. Nearly a third of fatal crashes, 316 of 1,012, happened at an intersection.¹ Kent, Kalamazoo, and Calhoun counties all feed into that total, but the counties don't behave the same way once you separate them out.

How Kent, Kalamazoo, and Calhoun compare

Kent County, home to Grand Rapids, recorded 19,429 crashes in 2024: 62 of them fatal, 64 people killed, and 5,249 injured, a rate of 521.5 crashes per 10,000 residents.² Kalamazoo County logged 7,272 crashes, 25 fatal, 25 killed, 1,848 injured, a rate of 492.2 per 10,000.³ Calhoun County, anchored by Battle Creek, had 4,624 crashes, 19 fatal, 20 killed, 793 injured, a rate of 520.4 per 10,000, nearly identical to Kent's despite a fraction of the population.⁴ All three rates cluster close together, roughly one crash for every 19 or 20 licensed drivers each year.

The counties diverge in the details. Kent County's worst day for crashes is Thursday, not the Friday you'd expect; Kalamazoo's and Calhoun's worst day is Friday, matching the regional pattern.²³⁴ Kalamazoo's fatal crashes cluster oddly by day: Tuesday alone accounted for 9 of the county's 25 traffic deaths in 2024, more than a third, despite being an ordinary day for total crash volume.³ Calhoun's fatal crashes cluster by time of day instead, with 7 of 19, 37 percent, happening between 6 and 9 p.m.⁴ Deer crashes are moving in opposite directions across the region: Kent's fell to 2,097 in 2024 and Kalamazoo's dropped sharply to 612, but Calhoun's climbed to 1,382, the highest of the five years on record for that county.⁴ None of the three counties recorded a fatal deer crash in 2024. Motorcycles are a small share of vehicles on the road everywhere, but in Calhoun County they were involved in 6 of 26 fatal-crash vehicles in 2024, 23 percent, far higher than their 1.1 percent share of all crash-involved vehicles.⁴

Grand Rapids and Kent County's worst corridors

US-131 at Wealthy Street has been Kent County's most dangerous intersection for years running. It logged 98 crashes and 10 injuries in 2022, and it still ranked 19th-worst in the entire state in 2024, with 73 crashes and 12 injuries.⁵⁶ Burton Street SW at US-131 saw fewer crashes that year, 78, but more injuries than any other Kent County intersection, 35.⁵ The 28th Street corridor turns up again and again: 28th Street at I-96 in Cascade Township (64 crashes, 6 injuries in 2022) and 28th Street SW at Burlingame Avenue SW in Wyoming (52 crashes, 23 injuries) both rank among the county's worst.⁵ A 41-year-old woman was killed in a hit-and-run on 28th Street SE in Kentwood on December 22, 2025, on a stretch between East Paris and Acquest Avenues.⁷

The Wealthy Street interchange is now getting real money behind it. Grand Rapids' City Commission approved a $7 million agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation to study rebuilding it, on top of a $10 million Michigan Economic Development Corporation grant awarded through the state's 2022 budget. The plan under study would drop Wealthy Street to grade and run US-131 over it, undoing some of the separation the 1960s overpass created between neighborhoods on either side of the highway. City engineers expect a larger rebuild is needed within the next decade given the bridge's age.⁸

Kalamazoo County's danger zones

The roundabout where Sprinkle Road meets Cork Street, just north of I-94, was Kalamazoo County's worst intersection in 2022: 68 crashes and 7 injuries, nearly double the 36 crashes recorded there the year before. Drake Road turns up three times in the county's top 10, at West KL Avenue (60 crashes, 12 injuries), at West Main Street (53 crashes, 8 injuries), and at Stadium Drive (38 crashes, 4 injuries). Park Street at West Kalamazoo Avenue had fewer total crashes than most of the list, 45, but 17 injuries, second-highest in the county. In Portage, Romence Parkway at South Westnedge Avenue logged 39 crashes and 9 injuries.⁹

Kalamazoo County was also the site of a crash that changed how federal investigators look at bicycle safety nationally. On June 7, 2016, a pickup truck drifted onto the paved shoulder of North Westnedge Avenue in Cooper Township and struck nine cyclists riding single file, killing five and seriously injuring four. Dispatchers had received multiple reports of the same truck driving erratically in the twenty-two minutes before the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board took the unusual step of investigating a local road crash directly; its final report found the driver's polysubstance impairment to be the probable cause and issued two safety recommendations, H-17-016 and H-17-017.¹⁰

Battle Creek and Calhoun County

Calhoun County's most detailed intersection breakdown is older than Kent's or Kalamazoo's, but the same locations keep coming up in Battle Creek police reports year after year. Beckley Road at M-66 topped the county's list with 61 crashes, followed by Beckley Road at Capital Avenue (50 crashes) and Columbia Avenue at Capital Avenue (37 crashes). Police pointed to distracted driving, specifically texting, phone use, and eating behind the wheel, as the common thread; one stretch near Beckley and Capital saw seven crashes in a single five-hour span.¹¹ That lines up with the county's motorcycle numbers: riders make up barely one in a hundred vehicles in Calhoun County crashes, yet nearly one in four fatal-crash vehicles in 2024.⁴

Winter weather adds its own risk

Lake-effect snow off Lake Michigan hits the Grand Rapids and Holland corridor harder than most of the state, and it shows up in the crash numbers every winter. On January 19, 2026, whiteout conditions with visibility under a quarter mile touched off a chain-reaction pileup on I-196 between the Hudsonville and Zeeland exits in Ottawa County, part of the same media market as Grand Rapids. Roughly 100 vehicles, including 30 to 40 semi-trucks, were involved. The Michigan State Police and Ottawa County Sheriff's Office reported 9 to 12 injuries and no deaths, and the freeway stayed closed in both directions for nearly eight hours while crews cleared the wreckage.¹²

After a crash in West Michigan

Not every dangerous stretch of road makes a top-10 list before it produces a serious crash, and the ordinary parts of 28th Street, Sprinkle Road, and Columbia Avenue see plenty of wrecks that never get counted in any ranking.
