Crash statistics and trends in the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville corridor

Real crash numbers for the Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville media market: county fatality counts, the roads that keep showing up in the data, and what SCDOT and NCDOT are doing about them.

The Greenville-Spartanburg-Asheville media market is really two states stitched together by a couple of interstates. Interstate 85 runs the upstate South Carolina spine through Anderson, Greenville, and Spartanburg before I-26 climbs into the mountains toward Asheville. People here commute across county and state lines constantly, and the crash data reflects that: this corridor produces some of the highest raw fatality counts in both states, year after year.

Where the numbers stand right now

As of July 26, 2026, South Carolina had recorded 482 traffic deaths statewide for the year, according to the Department of Public Safety's fatality tracker. Greenville County accounted for 28 of those, Spartanburg 42, and Anderson 221. That's not a new pattern. In 2023, Spartanburg County logged 74 fatal crashes and Greenville 68, the two highest county totals in South Carolina that year2.

Spartanburg County's interstates and Main Street

Spartanburg County finished 2025 with 73 traffic deaths and, again, the highest total of any county in the state34. Interstate 26 alone accounted for seven fatal wrecks, the most of any single road in the county, while Interstate 85 logged more than 1,000 collisions of all severities3. U.S. 29, which runs through the county as East Main Street, shows up repeatedly in the same data3. Speeding is the most common factor cited in the county's serious and fatal wrecks, followed by failure to yield and distracted driving3. Officials point to growth as part of the story. Spartanburg's population has climbed sharply over the past five years, and by one measure the county actually ranked just 17th in the state for fatalities per 100 million miles traveled in 2023, even while leading the state in raw deaths, which suggests traffic volume is doing a lot of the work4.

Greenville County's White Horse Road and Woodruff Road

Two corridors keep recurring in Greenville County's crash data. White Horse Road (U.S. 25) through Berea has been the subject of a SCDOT safety project since 2020, when the agency proposed upgrading 14 signalized intersections and adding a new signal at US-25 and S-149 (North Washington Road)5. Funding delays pushed most of that work back years. By 2024, SCDOT had completed drainage repairs on Bruce Road and paving at US-25's intersections with S-81 and S-253, with striping improvements from SC-81 to Lilly Street following that spring5. A StreetLight Data analysis by the nonprofit Bike Walk Greenville, built on two decades of SCDPS collision records, found White Horse Road carries roughly 35,500 vehicles a day and logged 25 pedestrian and cyclist collisions at the West Blue Ridge Road intersection alone6.

Woodruff Road (SC 146) is the other repeat offender. SCDOT's own traffic analysis counted 2,325 crashes on the corridor between January 2010 and December 2014, most of them rear-end collisions tied to congestion and vehicles turning on and off the main road7. The agency's current safety project broke ground February 25, 2024 at Roper Mountain Road and Verdae Boulevard. It added a new right-turn lane on Verdae, opened July 15, 2024, along with new signal foundations, drainage, curbs, sidewalks, and pedestrian ramps. A second phase is planned for the same corridor7.

Anderson County's steady toll

Anderson County's numbers are less dramatic but no less consistent. Between October 2023 and September 2024, the county recorded 39 fatal collisions and 39 deaths, along with 60 serious-injury collisions and 5,783 collisions overall, per SCDPS grant data8. Stretch that back five years, from October 2019 through September 2024, and the county logged 211 fatal collisions, 218 deaths, and more than 21,000 property-damage-only crashes8. As of late July 2026, Anderson had already recorded 22 deaths for the year1.

Asheville and Buncombe County across the state line

North of the state line, Asheville's numbers moved in a better direction in 2025. The Asheville Police Department's year-end report counted 16 traffic deaths, down 35 percent from the prior year, a drop Interim Chief Jackie Stepp attributed to more proactive patrols and the relaunch of the department's traffic safety unit9. That doesn't mean the roads themselves got any easier to drive. A handful of arteries (Patton Avenue, Merrimon Avenue, Tunnel Road, and Hendersonville Road) keep turning up as the city's highest-crash corridors, and the intersection of Patton Avenue and New Leicester Highway alone logged more than 140 crashes between 2020 and 202410. Out in the county, NCDOT is installing an all-way stop at Aiken Road and New Stock Road after logging 10 crashes there in five years. The agency's own data shows all-way conversions cut total crashes by 55 percent and fatal or serious-injury crashes by 92 percent at comparable intersections11.

The bigger fix in progress is the $1.8 billion I-26 Connector, which broke ground in April 2026 and isn't scheduled to finish until 2031. It's meant to untangle the Bowen Bridges, where I-26, I-240, and local Patton Avenue traffic currently merge in a configuration NCDOT itself flags as a safety and congestion problem, by rebuilding the interchange into a tighter urban diamond design and adding three new bridges over the French Broad River12.

The state line doesn't change the pattern

North Carolina's statewide numbers move independently of South Carolina's, but the shape looks familiar. The state logged 284,157 reportable crashes in 2023, up 3.8 percent from 2022, even as fatalities fell to 1,117 from 1,202 the year before13. Alcohol was a factor in 8,480 of those crashes and 377 of the deaths, and NCDOT estimates distracted driving contributed to roughly 17 percent of all 2023 crashes13. Whatever side of the state line a crash happens on here, the same two causes turn up again and again: speeding and distraction, usually on one of the roads already named above.

After a crash here

If you're dealing with a crash on any of these roads, the first steps are the same regardless of which county or state you're in: get medical care, get a police report filed, and get the other driver's insurance information before you leave the scene. Given how often these cases involve a dispute over fault at a known problem intersection, or a commercial vehicle on I-85 or I-26, it's worth getting an attorney's read on your case early rather than after an insurer has already made an offer.
