The deadliest highways and corridors around Harrisburg, Lancaster and York

PennDOT crash data and local police reports show where crashes cluster across the Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York region: Route 30, Route 283, I-83, I-81, Route 22 and Route 72, plus the intersections that log dozens of wrecks a year.

Every county in the Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York media market drains traffic onto a short list of the same highways: Route 30, Route 283, Route 22, I-81 and I-83. Statewide, Pennsylvania's crash numbers are trending the right direction. Traffic deaths fell to 1,047 in 2025, the lowest total since PennDOT started keeping records in 1928, and total reportable crashes dropped to 109,515, the second-lowest count on record after the pandemic-shortened year of 20201. That decline hasn't landed evenly. Local crash data still clusters on the same corridors and the same intersections year after year, and knowing where matters if you drive this region daily.

Route 22 and I-81 through Dauphin County

In Harrisburg and its suburbs, three intersections logged more crashes than anywhere else in Dauphin County between 2020 and 2024: Cameron Street at Elmerton Avenue in the city, with 56 crashes; Paxton Street at Mushroomhill Road in Swatara Township, with 46; and Hershey Road at Hersheypark Drive in Derry Township, with 36, based on a PennDOT dataset counting crashes within 250 feet of each intersection2.

Route 22 and I-81 supply the corridor-level risk. In February 2025, a multi-vehicle crash on Route 22 westbound between 39th Street and Park Street in Susquehanna Township closed all lanes and involved a police cruiser3. On I-81 in the same township, 33-year-old Dashon Banks of Harrisburg died in July 2025 when his car struck the back of a tractor-trailer stopped for a backlog at mile marker 68.5, where a construction zone had traffic down to one lane4. Work zones are a statewide problem, not just a Dauphin County one: PennDOT and Pennsylvania State Police logged 1,250 work zone crashes in 2024, with 22 deaths and 62 serious injuries, which is why troopers now ride in unmarked PennDOT maintenance trucks through District 8 work zones under a program called Operation Yellow Jacket5.

Route 30 and Route 283 in Lancaster County

Lancaster County's worst intersections cluster along its commercial spine. Chester Road at York Road in Manheim Township logged 128 crashes from 2020 through 2024, the highest count of any intersection in the county, followed by Prospect Road at Fairview Road in West Hempfield Township with 109 and Newport Road at Oregon Pike in West Earl Township with 532.

Route 283 has produced some of the county's worst outcomes recently. On July 5, 2025, 21-year-old Andrew Arbogast of Marietta died around 3 a.m. when his vehicle left the eastbound lanes at the Strickler Road overpass in Rapho Township and struck a bridge pillar in the center median6. Seven months later, 48-year-old Heather Bare of New Salem was killed near mile marker 24.2 when a Mercedes traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes hit an EMS vehicle and then a state police cruiser head-on7.

Inside the city, Lancaster's own crash mapping shows how concentrated the danger is: streets that make up just 6% of the city's road network account for 77% of its serious and fatal crashes and two-thirds of all bicycle and pedestrian crashes, and 95% of those high-injury streets are state routes that PennDOT, not the city, controls8. The county is also finishing a $72 million rebuild of the Route 30/Route 222 interchange, adding ramp lanes and raising the Route 222 bridge clearance, with work expected to wrap up by September 20279, plus a separate nine-mile resurfacing and intersection project on Route 30 running from Route 896 in East Lampeter Township to Route 772 in Salisbury Township10.

I-83 and Route 30 through York County

York County's deadliest recent crash wasn't a collision between drivers at all. On April 17, 2024, a box truck driver fell asleep around 3:25 a.m. on I-83 South at mile marker 35.5 in Fairview Township, drifted into an active work zone, and killed three roadside workers, Jesse McKenzie, Robert Hampe and Philson Hinebaugh, who were sealing pavement cracks. The driver, Reed Davenport, was charged with third-degree murder a year later11.

The county's highest-crash intersections both sit on Arsenal Road in Manchester Township: Arsenal Road at George Street logged 66 crashes from 2020 to 2024, and Arsenal Road at Toronita Street logged 58. Mount Zion Road at Market Street in Springettsbury Township was close behind at 512. On Route 30 itself, PennDOT is now designing a roundabout for the intersection at Big Mount Road in Jackson Township, about 10 miles west of York, after tallying 11 reportable crashes there in five years, nearly triple the statewide average for an unsignalized crossing of a state highway, with construction planned for 2027 and 202812. PennDOT's own before-and-after data on 47 roundabouts built statewide shows why: injury crashes dropped 51% and total crashes dropped 7% at intersections converted to roundabouts, with only two fatalities recorded at any state-route roundabout over a 20-year span13. PennDOT has also been upgrading traffic signals on a separate 4.1-mile stretch of Route 30 between Kenneth Road in West Manchester Township and North Hills Road in Springettsbury Township14.

Route 72 and the smaller roads of Lebanon County

Lebanon County's crash counts run lower than its neighbors, but the same pattern holds at the local level. Railroad Street at Cherry Street in Palmyra borough logged 41 crashes between 2020 and 2024, Cumberland Street at Bowman Street in Lebanon city logged 28, and Weavertown Road at Eighth Avenue in North Lebanon Township logged 242. On Route 72 in January 2025, a 60-year-old Jonestown man was struck and killed in the crosswalk at the Jonestown Road intersection by a 19-year-old driver; state police said the investigation into exactly what happened was still open15.

What's changing on these roads

Each county's planning agency has its own project underway. The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission, the federally designated planning body for the Harrisburg region, adopted a Safety Action Plan in July 2024 meant to identify priority corridors and intersections for road safety audits across Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties16. The Lancaster County MPO adopted its own countywide Traffic Safety Action Plan on October 28, 2025, built from five years of crash data and public input, specifically so local governments can qualify for more state and federal safety funding17. In York County, PennDOT has separately rolled out multi-route safety upgrades beyond the Route 30 work already underway18.

None of this moves fast enough for the people driving these roads today.
