Most dangerous intersections in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek

Michigan roads got more dangerous, not less, last year. State Police recorded 288,880 crashes in 2024, up from 287,953 in 2023, and 1,099 deaths, four more than the year before.¹ Bicyclist crashes jumped 20 percent to 1,773, and pedestrian crashes rose 1 percent to 2,131 statewide.¹ Those are statewide numbers, but if you drive in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, or Battle Creek, the risk has a street address. Kent, Kalamazoo, and Calhoun counties each have specific corridors where crashes cluster year after year, and local agencies are now spending federal and state money trying to fix them.

Grand Rapids's US-131 interchange and the 28th Street corridor

The interchange at US-131 and Wealthy Street logged 73 crashes and 12 injuries in 2024, enough to land it at number 19 on the state's annual ranking of Michigan's most dangerous intersections, the only spot outside metro Detroit to make the list.² That's actually an improvement: the same interchange saw 112 crashes and a fatality in 2023.² The Michigan Department of Transportation isn't treating that as good enough. MDOT wrapped up a planning study on US-131 between 28th Street and Cherry Street in December 2025, and the Wealthy Street interchange specifically will get a further, dedicated study in 2026 backed by a $10 million grant from the Michigan Legislature.³ MDOT also plans a queue-warning system for the freeway through Grand Rapids and new lighting through the S-curve between Wealthy and Pearl Street.³

Away from the freeway, 28th Street is Kent County's most consistent problem. Six of the county's ten most dangerous intersections sit along that one road, running through Wyoming, Kentwood, and Grand Rapids.⁴ The worst of them, 28th Street SW at Clyde Park Avenue in Wyoming, has logged as many as 62 crashes and 20 injuries in a single year; Buchanan Avenue SW, a few blocks over, isn't far behind at 46 crashes and 19 injuries.⁵ The city of Grand Rapids is working the problem at the pedestrian level too. In 2026, fourteen crossings around the city, including Fuller Avenue at Northlawn Street NE, Madison Avenue at Hoyt Street SE, and Walker Avenue NW at both Fremont and Garfield, are getting upgraded lighting, signage, and crossing treatments. The work is funded 90 percent by a federal Highway Safety Improvement Program grant, with the rest covered by the city's voter-approved Vital Streets fund.⁶

Kalamazoo's Drake Road and Sprinkle Road problem spots

Kalamazoo County's most dangerous intersection is the roundabout where Sprinkle Road meets Cork Street, just north of I-94. It logged 49 crashes and 15 injuries in 2024, actually down from 59 in 2023 and a peak of 68 in 2022, but injuries there were the highest they'd been in five years.⁷ Drake Road shows up again and again on the county's list: Drake and West Main Street saw 69 crashes in 2021, more than a 60 percent jump from 42 crashes the year before, and Drake also crosses paths with W KL Avenue and Stadium Drive at two more of the county's worst spots.^{7 8} Park Street at West Kalamazoo Avenue, in downtown Kalamazoo, had fewer total crashes but the highest injury count of any intersection in the county.⁸ Nine of the county's ten worst intersections sit inside the city of Kalamazoo itself.⁸

The city isn't just watching the numbers. Crashes citywide fell to 2,339 in 2025, down from 2,530 in 2024 and nearly a quarter below the 2014-2019 average, under a federally required Safe Streets for All action plan that has converted several four-lane roads to three lanes, added roundabouts, tightened signal timing, and installed speed humps and audible pedestrian signals at trouble spots.⁹ "By tailoring these devices to specific crash and street characteristics at locations around the city, we are able to maximize safety overall to our street system," says Dennis Randolph, the city's public works manager and traffic engineer.⁹ Outside the city, the Road Commission of Kalamazoo County is building a $1 million roundabout at Sprinkle Road and TU Avenue in Vicksburg, split between a $750,000 state grant and local funds, after the intersection's crash count finally rose high enough to qualify for state safety money.¹⁰

Battle Creek and the Beckley Road corridor

Calhoun County's intersection data is older, but the roads haven't changed. Beckley Road at M-66 has long been the county's worst intersection, with 61 crashes recorded in one year; nearby, Beckley Road at Capital Avenue, just south of the I-94 exit, saw 50, and Columbia Avenue at Capital Avenue logged 37, worsened by a lane configuration where two through lanes suddenly merge into one without warning.¹¹ The corridor stays busy. Battle Creek police investigated a fatal motorcycle crash on southwest Capital Avenue,¹² and a car that lost control on M-66 near Glenn Cross Road was rear-ended by a semi-truck, sending its driver and a critically injured passenger to the hospital.¹³

Why this keeps happening and what the state is doing

Michigan's Governor's Traffic Safety Advisory Commission has set a formal goal, called SAFER by 2030, to cut roadway fatalities 30 percent by the end of the decade, targeting the same handful of causes that show up in nearly every serious crash report: distracted driving, speeding, impaired driving, and unbuckled seat belts.¹⁴ Locally, that goal is showing up as concrete projects: a roundabout at Sprinkle and TU, road diets across Kalamazoo, a freeway interchange study on US-131, and fourteen new pedestrian crossings in Grand Rapids. None of it will make these roads safe overnight.
