Oklahoma City's most dangerous intersections and roads
If you got hit in Oklahoma City, you're not imagining that some roads feel worse than others. The city's own numbers back that up. Traffic deaths in Oklahoma City rose 34 percent over five years, with 99 people killed in 2021 alone, many of them on high-speed roads with poor lighting.1 That trend pushed the city to adopt its first Vision Zero Action Plan on February 25, 2025, a formal commitment to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries on OKC streets.2
The city's own map of where crashes cluster
Oklahoma City's planners didn't guess at which roads are dangerous. Working from several years of crash records, the Vision Zero Action Plan identifies a High Injury Network, seven corridors that account for a disproportionate share of the city's fatal and serious-injury crashes.2 They are:
- NE 23rd Street, from I-35 to N Bartell Road
- NW 23rd Street, from N Ann Arbor Avenue to N I-44
- Mustang Road, from Reno Avenue to SW 59th Street
- SW 44th Street, from I-44 to Johnston Drive
- S Pennsylvania Avenue, from SW Grand Boulevard to SW 59th Street
- NW 10th Street, from County Line Road to N Rockwell Avenue
- NW Expressway, from N Council Road to N Wilshire Boulevard
The plan's first move is narrower still. It targets the 15 most dangerous streets and intersections in the city for early fixes before expanding citywide.2 Senior planner Max Harris, who helped write the plan, put the logic simply: "Speed turns a fender-bender into a life-threatening crash. Roundabouts lower speed and force people to slow down."3 He's also blunt about what the crash data shows: "These are actually preventable, maybe not all crashes, but fatal crashes and most serious injury crashes really are preventable."3
Why the I-35/I-240 interchange keeps coming up
Ask anyone who drives south Oklahoma City daily, and the I-35/I-240 interchange comes up fast. The numbers explain why. In 2021 alone, the interchange logged more than 240 crashes, resulting in 54 injuries and one death.4 The structure is roughly 50 years old and was never built for the traffic it now carries: I-35 through the interchange sees about 131,000 vehicles a day, and I-240 about 80,000.4
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is partway through a multi-phase rebuild. The current phase, a $72.2 million contract funded entirely through the federal National Highway Performance Program, is adding a third through lane on parts of I-240, rebuilding roughly 4,000 feet of pavement, replacing two railroad bridges, and relocating five water mains and six sanitary sewer lines to make room for new ramps.4 Resident engineer Jonathan Brooks has described the balancing act crews face: they can close lanes overnight, but not during the day, given how much traffic the interchange still has to carry mid-project.4
A further phase, filed with federal regulators under the project name "Crossroads of America," would replace the aging I-240 bridge over I-35 with a three-level, semi-directional interchange between SE 66th and SE 82nd Street.5 Construction on that phase is projected to run 2026 through 2028, with full operations starting in 2029.5
A fix already underway on NW 23rd
One High Injury Network corridor is getting attention now. The city's NW 23rd Street streetscape project, running from Western Avenue to Broadway Avenue through the Uptown 23rd District, went out to bid in September 2025, with construction slated to start in January 2026 and run about 18 months.6 The $9.3 million job is funded jointly through an ACOG grant and the city's 2017 bond program, and it's meant to slow traffic and improve pedestrian crossings along a stretch the city's own crash data flagged as high-risk.6
The same pattern across the metro
The Association of Central Oklahoma Governments, which coordinates transportation planning for 46 cities across the metro, has been tracking the same trend at a wider scale. At a Regional Safety Summit held with the city on February 28, 2024, ACOG reported that crashes across central Oklahoma jumped 21 percent from 2020 to 2021, reaching 21,146 total crashes in a single year.7 ACOG Deputy Director John M. Sharp framed the partnership this way: "We're proud to partner with the City of Oklahoma City to combat rising roadway fatalities and injuries in Central Oklahoma."7
ACOG's broader Regional Safety Action Plan, built with the same 2017-2021 Oklahoma Highway Safety Office crash data the city used, found that most regional fatalities happen on streets posted at 45 mph or higher, or on roads with limited street lighting, a pattern that lines up with what OKC's own Vision Zero data shows.8 Both plans were funded through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All program, part of the same push to get the metro to zero traffic deaths.8
If you're hurt at one of these locations
None of this data changes what happens right after a crash. Oklahoma is a fault-based state, so who caused the wreck, and whether that can be proven, still determines who pays for medical bills, lost wages, and vehicle damage. But knowing an intersection sits on the High Injury Network, or that ODOT itself has documented over 240 crashes a year at a nearby interchange, can matter later. It's evidence that the road's design played a role too.
Get the police report. Photograph the intersection, any skid marks, and signal timing if you can do so safely. Hold onto medical records from day one. If the crash happened along one of the corridors above, an attorney who already knows the area's crash history can be useful. You can find one through the legal directory.
