San Antonio's most dangerous intersections

On the night of December 10, 2025, a crash at Culebra Road and Ingram Road caught fire, killing one person and sending two others to the hospital.¹ It was one more entry on a stretch of road San Antonio's own transportation department already ranks as the worst in the city.

If you were hurt in a crash on Culebra Road, at the Loop 410 and State Highway 151 interchange, on Interstate 35 near O'Connor Road, or along the Military Drive corridor, you're not imagining a pattern. The city's own crash data backs it up, and 2026 has already added new names to the list.

Culebra Road, the corridor the city calls the most dangerous in town

Culebra Road has logged more than 110 fatal and serious-injury crashes over the past five years, according to Texas Department of Transportation data reviewed by San Antonio's Transportation Department.¹ The road runs more than 15 miles across the West Side through a mix of small businesses and neighborhoods, and it carries seven lanes of traffic where the posted limit tops out around 40 to 45 mph.

"Culebra is one of the most dangerous in town," said Joe Conger, public relations manager for the city's Transportation Department, who pointed to distracted driving and distracted walking as the two behaviors the city is trying to change along the corridor.¹ Culebra topped the list when the Transportation Department launched its public High-Injury Network Dashboard on December 4, 2025, part of a $1.2 million "Keep Crossing Safe" campaign. Using TxDOT crash records from 2018 through 2022, the dashboard ranked Culebra Road first with 116 fatal or serious-injury crashes, followed by Bandera Road (38), Roosevelt Avenue (37), Southeast Military Drive (34), and Southwest Military Drive (31).²

Loop 410 and State Highway 151, where two of the city's busiest roads meet

The interchange of Loop 410 and State Highway 151 on the West Side has seen repeated serious wrecks. On January 20, 2026, a major crash there shut down multiple northbound lanes of Loop 410 for hours, with only one lane open at the height of the closure.³ TxDOT is currently widening State Highway 151 between Loop 1604 and Interstate 410 to six travel lanes, adding inside shoulders, a concrete median barrier, and rebuilt entrance and exit ramps. Construction began in May 2023 and is scheduled to finish in December 2026. The agency's own project page cites the corridor's traffic growth over the past decade as the reason the upgrade is needed.⁴

Interstate 35 near O'Connor Road and Judson Road

On the Northeast Side, a review of TxDOT crash data after a fatal rear-end collision with an 18-wheeler on June 8, 2026, found Interstate 35 near O'Connor Road logged 154 crashes in 2025, the highest concentration anywhere along I-35 in San Antonio. The stretch near Judson Road ranked second, with 138 crashes that same year.⁵ "Safety is TxDOT's top priority, and we urge drivers to slow down and stay alert in construction zones," a TxDOT spokesperson said in response. The interstate is mid-way through a multi-year widening project, with the Central segment targeted for completion in late 2027 and the South Phase 1 segment in late 2028.⁵

The Military Drive corridor, South Side

Southeast and Southwest Military Drive both sit on the city's High-Injury Network, and residents along both stretches describe the same problem: speed.² On March 11, 2026, a 63-year-old woman crossing Southeast Military Drive between Old Corpus Christi Road and South Presa Street was struck by a vehicle and suffered a broken ankle. It was the latest incident on a stretch where two pedestrians were killed in August 2025 and where the city had already installed new crosswalk lighting and signals that November. District 3 Councilwoman Phyllis Viagran called for traffic officers and a speed trailer at the location. "We need people to slow down and to be aware of their surroundings," she said.⁶

Street racing has turned Southwest Military Drive into its own hazard. Police say the corridor has had at least four racing-related crashes so far in 2026, two with injuries and three fatal.⁷ The most recent came on June 28, 2026, near Mango Avenue, when 17-year-old Moncerrat "Monce" Martinez Maldonado was struck and killed crossing the street after her shift at a nearby restaurant. Police say the driver, 19-year-old Vynzell Edward McGarity, was racing another car in a Dodge Charger at the time. He was charged with racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury and reckless driving. A judge reduced his bond from $100,000 to $50,000 on July 23, 2026, over objections from the victim's mother, Sandra Maldonado, who told reporters, "I won't stop until there is justice for my daughter."⁸

What the city is doing about it

San Antonio adopted Vision Zero, a commitment to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries, in 2015. In September 2024 it approved the first Vision Zero Action Plan of any city in Texas.⁹ The goal hasn't been met yet. More than 133 fatal crashes killed 141 people in San Antonio in 2025, including 54 pedestrians and 4 bicyclists.¹⁰ Transportation Director Catherine Hernandez put it plainly: "Our goal is zero deaths; zero serious injuries."¹⁰

The city is also adding infrastructure to watch these roads more closely. In December 2025, City Council approved a $2.67 million project, roughly $2.1 million from TxDOT and $533,577.60 from the city's Advanced Transportation District Fund, to install 93 traffic-monitoring and vehicle-detection cameras at intersections across San Antonio. The cameras feed data to the city's Transportation and Infrastructure Management Center. Construction started in 2025 and is expected to finish by summer 2026.¹¹
