If you were just in a wreck around Albuquerque or Santa Fe, the shape of the collision tells you a lot about what happened. A right-angle hit, the kind people call a T-bone, almost always means an intersection. A rollover usually means a fast road and a shoulder that gives way. A head-on usually means a two-lane highway or a driver going the wrong direction. These three patterns don't cluster in the same places, and the local crash data shows where each one lands.
T-bone crashes and the metro's worst intersections
Intersections are where the region's angle crashes and its most serious injuries pile up. The analysis behind the Santa Fe Metropolitan Planning Organization's Local Road Safety Plan found that intersection-related crashes accounted for 40 percent of New Mexico's traffic fatalities and 61 percent of its serious injuries.1
The danger is not spread evenly. In the Albuquerque area, the Mid-Region Metropolitan Planning Organization mapped every fatal and injury crash from 2019 through 2023 and found that 64 percent of them happened on just 7 percent of the region's major streets.2 NMDOT data presented to state lawmakers put nine of New Mexico's ten most dangerous intersections inside Albuquerque, with Central Avenue alone holding six of the top ten and Central and Louisiana in the International District ranked the worst of all.3 That is also where the state's pedestrian toll is heaviest; New Mexico has had the highest pedestrian death rate in the country every year since 2016.3
The Big I, where Interstate 25 and Interstate 40 stack together, is its own problem. NMDOT's operations study of the interchange ties the heavy morning congestion on the I-40 ramps feeding northbound I-25 to a higher frequency of crashes on those ramps and their approaches.4
In Santa Fe the numbers are smaller and the pattern is the same. A five-year review of local streets in the Santa Fe planning area, covering 2015 through 2019, counted 8,927 crashes, of which 2,852 caused an injury or a death; 109 of the most severe crashes left 118 people killed or seriously hurt.1 Cerrillos Road carries the highest concentration of those fatal and serious-injury crashes, about 27 percent, with Airport Road second at 12 percent and St. Michael's Drive and West Alameda Street close behind.1 Sixty-two road segments, roughly 114 miles, account for 83 percent of the area's worst crashes while making up only 7 percent of local mileage, and Santa Fe County ranks among the six New Mexico counties with the most fatal and serious-injury crashes.1
Rollovers on the fast roads out of town
Rollovers are mostly a rural, high-speed story. The New Mexico Department of Health reports that rural and mixed rural-urban counties carry higher motor-vehicle death rates, driven by higher speeds and the longer time it takes an ambulance to reach a wreck out in open country.5
You can see it on the highways that leave the metro. On December 3, 2022, a commercial truck on U.S. 550 near milepost 105 by Counselor, in Rio Arriba County, blew a tire, crossed the northbound lanes, struck a guardrail, and rolled. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the cab, and died at the scene. New Mexico State Police ran the investigation.6
That wreck shows the two things that make rollovers so deadly: leaving the road and being ejected. Roadway departure, which covers vehicles that run off the road or overturn, was the first crash type the Santa Fe safety plan singled out, and it travels with impairment. In the Santa Fe region, 56 percent of the roadway-departure deaths and serious injuries involved an impaired driver.1 Seatbelts change the outcome: observed belt use in New Mexico sits above 90 percent, but unbelted drivers keep showing up in the worst rural crashes, and pickup occupants buckle up the least.1
Head-on crashes and the U.S. 550 problem
For head-on crashes, one road stands out. U.S. 550 runs 175 miles from Bernalillo up to Aztec, most of it posted at 70 mph, and for years the northbound and southbound lanes were separated by nothing more than a six-foot flat median with rumble strips. Many of the deaths on it came from vehicles crossing that median into oncoming traffic. From 2004 through 2015, 125 people died on the highway, and a Cuba police patrolman called the stretch north of San Ysidro a "killing zone."7
There is a known fix for that failure mode. The Federal Highway Administration counts median barriers among its proven safety countermeasures, and its evaluation of cable median barriers found they cut fatal and injury crashes on divided highways by roughly 80 percent in one state study.8
Closer to the city, the head-on danger takes a different form. Wrong-way drivers on Interstate 25, often late at night and often impaired, have caused deadly head-on crashes near Albuquerque and Bernalillo.9
What the three crash types share
The common thread is speed meeting a thin margin for error, whether that is a driver running a red light at a city intersection, a car drifting off a fast rural road, or a vehicle in the wrong lanes of a highway. The outcomes are worse because the energy is higher and, on the rural roads, help is farther away. Albuquerque recorded at least 94 traffic deaths in 2024 by the city's preliminary count, and the city has set a target of zero traffic deaths by 2040.10
If you were hurt in one of these, a few practical steps matter later. Get the official crash report, and know which agency to ask for it: the Albuquerque Police Department or Santa Fe Police Department on city streets, the Bernalillo County or Santa Fe County Sheriff in unincorporated areas, and the New Mexico State Police on the interstates and on U.S. 550. Write down the exact intersection or the milepost, since that location is how the crash gets logged in the state's database, which the University of New Mexico's Traffic Research Unit compiles each year.11 Photograph the vehicles, the road, and any skid marks or debris before anything is moved.
