Rollover, T-bone, and head-on crash hotspots around Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek

If you commute on US-131 through downtown Grand Rapids or merge onto I-94 near Kalamazoo, you're driving the roads where Michigan's deadliest crash patterns land. Three collision types cause most of the serious harm: the angle crash (the T-bone), the head-on, and the rollover. Michigan recorded 288,880 traffic crashes in 2024. Of those, 1,012 were fatal, 1,099 people were killed, and 5,781 were left with suspected serious injuries.¹ The Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Battle Creek market spans a dozen counties across West and Southwest Michigan, and it sits on the state's busiest north-south route, US-131, and its main east-west freeway, I-94. A large share of the state's crashes happen on roads people here use every day.

Where T-bones happen

An angle crash is what most people call a T-bone: one vehicle's front hits another's side, almost always at an intersection when a driver runs a red light or turns across oncoming traffic. Angle crashes made up 44,511 of Michigan's reported collisions in 2024.² They cluster where fatal crashes cluster. Of the state's 1,012 fatal crashes that year, 316 (31.2%) happened at an intersection.¹ Red lights are a big part of it. Of 6,326 red-light-running crashes in 2024, 5,325 (84.2%) were angle crashes.³

In Kent County, crash records compiled by the Michigan State Police in Michigan Traffic Crash Facts point to a short list of problem intersections. US-131 at Wealthy Street logged 73 crashes in 2024, the most of any intersection in the county, with a dozen injuries.⁴ In Wyoming, the 54th Street SW ramps at US-131 recorded 70 crashes and one death, and 28th Street at I-96 in Cascade Township saw 65.⁴ The 28th Street retail spine runs the width of the metro and shows up again and again on these lists. For T-bones specifically, watch 44th Street SE at South Division Avenue in Kentwood: 43 crashes but 26 injuries, an injury count far above busier intersections and a sign of hard side impacts.⁴

Kalamazoo County's map looks different because of how its roads are built. The Sprinkle Road roundabout at Cork Street, just north of I-94, drew 49 crashes and 15 injuries in 2024, the county's highest, most of them low-speed sideswipes and entering-vehicle hits rather than classic T-bones.⁴ Drake Road is the repeat offender for angle crashes, with 41 at West KL Avenue and more down the Stadium Drive corridor.⁴ In Battle Creek, the Beckley Road corridor near the I-94 interchange, where big-box retail feeds onto a fast arterial, has long been the city's cluster for turning and angle crashes; the same query tool lets Calhoun County drivers pull the current ranking for their own intersections.⁴

Freeway interchanges produce their own turning and angle wrecks. On July 1, 2026, a semi on M-6 crossed into a southbound car on US-131 at the US-131/M-6 interchange in Byron Township after the truck driver had a medical emergency, killing one person; a second crash on M-6 that same morning sent three more people to the hospital.⁵

Head-on crashes and the wrong-way problem

Head-on crashes are less common and much deadlier per collision. Michigan logged 3,209 straight head-on crashes in 2024, plus another 7,313 head-on crashes tied to left turns.² Two situations drive the fatal ones here. One is a driver crossing the centerline on a rural two-lane road. The other is a wrong-way driver entering a freeway against traffic, the rarer but more lethal version. Winter sharpens the risk: of the 36 people killed in fatal winter-weather crashes statewide during the 2023-2024 season, 13 (36.1%) died in head-on collisions.⁶

This market has lived through the worst version of it. In April 2023, a pickup driving east in the westbound lanes of I-94 in Marengo Township, in Calhoun County, hit a minivan head-on and killed three people, including a 4-year-old girl.⁷ In Grand Rapids, an SUV crossed the median on I-196 near the Lake Michigan Drive exit in July 2026, struck a westbound vehicle head-on, and left one person dead and four critically hurt.⁸ In Kalamazoo County, a wrong-way driver on westbound I-94 near Lovers Lane hit a pickup head-on and put two people in the hospital.⁹ The Michigan State Police worked all three scenes.

Rollovers and the single-vehicle problem

A rollover usually involves just one vehicle. A car drifts off the pavement, catches soft ground or a curb, and trips onto its side or roof. Rollovers are a small share of all crashes and a large share of the deaths. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that rollovers accounted for 28% of passenger-vehicle occupant deaths in 2023, and in 2024 they were behind 38% of pickup occupant deaths and 33% of SUV occupant deaths.¹⁰ In Michigan, single-vehicle crashes carry an outsized share of the deaths: 508 single-vehicle fatal crashes in 2024 killed 537 people.¹ Speed runs through it. Of all speed-related crashes in the state, 71% involved only one vehicle.¹¹

Two features of this area's roads raise the odds. The first is the US-131 S-curve through downtown Grand Rapids, a 1.2-mile run with three interchanges and six bridges that carries the metro's heaviest traffic. Federal highway researchers documented that the old S-curve's sharp curve "resulted in higher-than-average crash levels" before it was rebuilt with wider lanes and shoulders in 2000, and the geometry still punishes anyone who takes it too fast in rain or snow.¹² The second is deer country on the rural edges. Michigan logged 58,324 vehicle-deer crashes in 2024, and Kent County had more of them than any county in the state, at 2,097, with Allegan (1,517), Ottawa (1,433), and Calhoun (1,382) close behind. Nearly 43% of those deer crashes fell in October through December, and a hard swerve to miss a deer is a classic trigger for a run-off-road rollover.¹³ Overturns happen at freeway speed too. In December 2024 a box truck overturned on eastbound I-94 in Comstock Township and slid into three Comstock fire trucks and a Kalamazoo County sheriff's patrol car that were parked at an earlier crash.¹⁴
