Rollover, T-bone, and head-on hotspots across Los Angeles

Rollovers, T-bones, and head-on crashes cause a large share of LA's most serious injuries, and they concentrate on specific roads. Here's where, and what the local data actually says.

If a car just hit you hard from the side, flipped you, or came at you head-on, you already know these are not ordinary fender benders. Broadside (T-bone), rollover, and head-on crashes are the collision types most likely to kill or leave injuries you feel for years, and across Los Angeles they don't spread evenly.

Serious crashes here sit on a small slice of the map. The city's Vision Zero analysis found that 549 miles of street, about 7.5% of the roadway network, carried 61.8% of everyone killed or severely injured on city streets.1 Boulevards and avenues, which are 19% of the network, accounted for 87% of those crashes.1 On average between 2017 and 2021, Los Angeles lost 132 pedestrians, 73 drivers, 31 motorcyclists, and 18 bicyclists every year.1

T-bone crashes and LA's deadliest intersections

A T-bone happens when the front of one vehicle slams into the side of another, usually after someone runs a red light, rolls a stop sign, or turns across oncoming traffic. Intersections are where it plays out, and in Los Angeles the danger sits at the signals. Signalized intersections are only about 11% of all intersections in the city, yet they account for more than half of all killed-or-severely-injured crashes.1 Left turns drive a large share: roughly 13% of drivers in the city's serious vehicle-only crashes were turning left when they crashed.1

Red-light running is the classic cause. In 2024, 1,119 people nationwide were killed in crashes involving a red-light runner, and about half of them were pedestrians, cyclists, or people in another vehicle rather than the driver who blew the light.2 Enforcement moves the numbers. In Oxnard, inside the LA media market, front-into-side crashes dropped 32% after red-light cameras went in.2

The hotspots are specific. LADOT ranks Florence Avenue and Vermont Avenue as the highest-scoring intersection on its All Modes High Injury Network, and Vermont Avenue reappears up and down the list alongside corridors like Century Boulevard and Figueroa Street through South LA.1 Statewide, broadside crashes caused 6,116 collisions on California highways in 2024, 122 of them fatal.3

Head-on crashes, from arterials to wrong-way freeways

Head-on collisions add the speed of both vehicles together, which is why they punch so far above their frequency. On California's state highways in 2024, head-on crashes were only about 1,930 of roughly 153,000 total collisions, but they killed 158 people, more than one in ten of the 1,338 fatal crashes on those routes.3

Inside the city, head-on vehicle collisions make up about 13% of LA's serious vehicle-only crashes, clustering at Slauson Avenue and Western Avenue, Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Vermont Avenue, and Hoover Street and Manchester Avenue.1 These are wide surface streets where one driver crossing a center line, or cutting a fast left turn, runs into traffic coming the other way.

The freeway version is the wrong-way driver. Caltrans reports that an average of 37 people die each year in wrong-way crashes in California, with 248 wrong-way collisions on state highways in 2019.4 They are less than one-tenth of one percent of all highway crashes, but far deadlier than average because they are almost always head-on and often involve an impaired driver.4 Caltrans has answered with red reflective pavement markers, larger WRONG WAY and DO NOT ENTER signs, and one-way arrows painted onto off-ramps.4

Rollovers and the roads that cause them

Rollovers are uncommon next to rear-enders, but they kill far out of proportion to how often they occur. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that crashes in which a vehicle rolled over made up 28% of all passenger-vehicle occupant deaths in 2024.5 Taller vehicles fare worst: rollovers were 38% of pickup occupant deaths and 33% of SUV occupant deaths, against 20% for cars.5 Single-vehicle rollovers alone killed 4,547 people that year.5 On California highways, 4,357 crashes in 2024 involved a vehicle overturning, 105 of them fatal.3

Rollovers come from speed and geometry: too much speed into a curve, or drifting off the pavement. Los Angeles has one road almost built to produce them. The Arroyo Seco Parkway, State Route 110 between downtown and Pasadena, opened in 1940 as the first freeway in the western United States. It was engineered for about 45 mph, with tight curves, almost no shoulder, and on-ramps that begin at stop signs with no acceleration lane, so drivers merge into fast traffic from a dead stop.67 Caltrans District 7 now has a project to replace the viaduct where the northbound 110 meets the northbound 5, rebuild the Avenue 43 ramp bridge, and upgrade the Arroyo Seco Channel bridge.6 A separate SR-110 Safety and Operational Enhancement Project would widen a shoulder on a tight turn and improve ramp access.7

Speed connects all three crash types. LADOT found unsafe speed was the primary factor in 40% of vehicle-only crashes that ended in a death.1

Severe crashes leave a paper trail. Whoever responds (LAPD on city streets, the California Highway Patrol on the freeways, or a local police department) files a traffic collision report, and that report, along with the crash type and exact location, tends to shape how fault and injuries get evaluated later. Get the report number, photograph the scene and the roadway if you can do it safely, and see a doctor even if you feel okay, because rollover and side-impact injuries often surface days afterward.

The city is still far from its targets. LAPD counted 303 traffic deaths in Los Angeles in 2024, and serious-injury crashes rose about 13% between 2017 and 2021.81 If another driver caused your crash and you're deciding what comes next, you can weigh local options through the legal directory.
