Not every crash is the same wreck. A rear-end tap on a jammed freeway ramp and a right-angle hit at a stale green light send very different forces through the people inside. Three crash types do most of the killing on Minnesota roads: right-angle "T-bone" collisions at intersections, head-on crashes on two-lane highways, and rollovers when a vehicle leaves the road. In 2024, 475 people died on Minnesota roads across 429 fatal crashes, according to preliminary counts from the state Office of Traffic Safety.1 The Twin Cities carry a heavy share of that toll, and the wrecks are not spread evenly. They pile up on a short list of roads.
Where the wrecks pile up
Minneapolis has mapped exactly where. The city's Vision Zero program found that about 10% of its streets account for 64% of the fatal and serious-injury crashes from 2020 through 2024.2 Around 160 people are killed or seriously hurt on city streets each year, and 2022 was the worst recent year, with 206 serious-injury or fatal crashes.2 Speed keeps getting deadlier. It was a factor in 80% of the city's fatal crashes in 2024, up from 43% in 2017.2
Those crashes concentrate on a handful of wide arterials. The city has aimed its rebuilds at corridors like Lyndale Avenue North, Nicollet Avenue, Bloomington Avenue, Plymouth Avenue North, and Dowling Avenue.3 If you drive Minneapolis often, you already know these as the streets where you see the sudden stops and hear the sirens.
St. Paul tells the same story with different street names. Its Transportation Safety Action Plan, completed in 2023,4 counted 23,145 crashes citywide through the end of 2022, with 31% of them on limited-access highways.5 The plan's crash analysis flags the Interstate 94 corridor, where ramps meet major surface streets at Snelling Avenue, Lexington Parkway, University Avenue, and Dale Street, plus arterials on the north and east sides: Maryland Avenue, Rice Street, White Bear Avenue, and East 7th Street.5 In 2024 the city won a $15.7 million federal Safe Streets and Roads for All grant to rebuild about 40 miles of roadway and 100 intersections in the wards with the highest crash rates, with planning studies set for Como and White Bear avenues.6
T-bone crashes and the intersection fix
Right-angle crashes are an intersection problem. One driver runs a red or misjudges a gap, and the other car takes the hit on the door, where there's little between a person and the impact. Minnesota's safety plan lists intersections among six factors present in roughly 90% of the state's fatal and serious-injury crashes.7
The state's response has been to rebuild the intersections so a T-bone is hard to produce in the first place. Roundabouts make everyone slow down and merge in one direction, which erases the crossing paths that cause side-impact wrecks. MnDOT's own review found a 69% drop in the right-angle crash rate at single-lane roundabouts, an 86% drop in the fatal crash rate, and an 83% drop in serious-injury crashes.8 The state had more than 530 roundabouts on its roads as of October 2024.8 On four-lane divided highways, MnDOT builds "J-turns," also called reduced conflict intersections, which stop side-street drivers from crossing every lane at once. The agency credits them with cutting fatalities about 70% and injury crashes about 42% where they replace a conventional crossing.9 Both designs are spreading across the metro's suburban and outer-ring highways, the higher-speed county and state roads where one missed gap used to be lethal.
Head-on crashes on two-lane roads
Head-on crashes are less common but far worse, because the closing speed is the sum of both vehicles. MnDOT groups head-on and run-off-road rollover crashes together as lane departures, one of the six factors behind roughly 90% of the state's fatal and serious-injury crashes.7 In the metro, head-ons show up most on the two-lane roads at the region's edge and on undivided highways, where nothing but paint separates opposing traffic. Most begin with a drift across the centerline. MnDOT's countermeasure is cheap and it works: centerline rumble strips that buzz loudly when a driver wanders left. The agency reports they cut head-on and opposite-direction sideswipe crashes, and it had laid down well over 800 miles of them on the state highway system by 2012.10
Rollovers and running off the road
A rollover is usually a single-vehicle crash. A car drifts onto the shoulder, the driver overcorrects, and the vehicle trips and flips, often on a curve, an entrance ramp, or a rural stretch with a narrow shoulder. These run-off-road crashes are one of the lane-departure types the state tracks most closely, and they have been getting worse. Minnesota's traffic-safety partners reported a 14% rise in single-vehicle run-off-road fatal and serious-injury crashes from 2020 to 2022, along with an 11% rise in unbelted victims and a 17% rise in speed-related ones.11 A seat belt does its most important work in exactly this crash, because it keeps you inside the vehicle while it rolls.
What to do after a serious crash
The type of crash shapes what comes next. A T-bone often turns into a fight over who had the green. A rollover raises questions about speed and road design. Whatever hit you, get the crash report number, photograph the vehicles and the intersection or roadway, and write down the nearest cross streets while you still remember them.
