Rollover, T-bone and head-on hotspots in the Oklahoma City metro
If you were just in a wreck on the Northwest Expressway or out on I-35, you already know how fast an ordinary drive turns into the worst day of your year. Oklahoma City sees a lot of these. In 2021 the city recorded 18,935 reported crashes. Ninety-five of them were fatal, 99 people were killed, and another 356 were seriously hurt.1 Across Oklahoma County that same year, 107 people died on the roads.1
Not every crash carries the same risk. Three types do most of the killing for how often they happen: the T-bone at an intersection, the head-on on an undivided road, and the rollover on a high-speed curve or ramp. This page walks through where each one tends to happen around the metro, using Oklahoma Highway Safety Office and Oklahoma Department of Transportation figures instead of guesswork.
T-bone crashes and why intersections are the problem
A T-bone, what a crash report calls an angle collision, is when the front of one vehicle strikes the side of another. A door and a pillar are most of what stands between an occupant and the other car, so these hit hard. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that side impacts accounted for 22 percent of passenger vehicle occupant deaths in 2024, second only to frontal crashes.2
Intersections concentrate that risk. The Federal Highway Administration estimates that roughly a quarter of U.S. traffic deaths and about half of all traffic injuries happen at or near intersections.3 Oklahoma's numbers line up. In the 2024 state crash figures, angle crashes were 17.64 percent of multi-vehicle wrecks and left-turn crashes another 16.37 percent, and together those two intersection movements accounted for more than a quarter of the state's fatal multi-vehicle crashes.4
In Oklahoma City this plays out on the wide signalized arterials. Northwest 23rd Street between Meridian Avenue and I-44 is one stretch the city has singled out, where speeds are high enough to turn a routine left turn or a missed light into a serious wreck. Oklahoma City's Vision Zero coordinator has said speed reductions along that corridor are needed to bring the deadly crashes down.5
Head-on crashes, the rarest type and the deadliest for its size
Head-on collisions are uncommon and merciless. In the 2024 Oklahoma data, head-ons were only 1.96 percent of multi-vehicle crashes but 10.49 percent of the fatal ones.4 A crash type that shows up about once in fifty is doing roughly one in ten of the dying.
Most head-ons happen where nothing separates opposing traffic, on two-lane roads and undivided arterials, and those are common on the metro's fast-growing edges. South Mustang Road, on the far west side, is one corridor Oklahoma City flagged for a disproportionate share of fatal crashes.5 Wrong-way drivers on the divided highways are the other source, and those hit head-on at combined freeway speed.
Rollovers, one vehicle and one mistake at speed
A rollover usually needs only a single vehicle and a bad moment at high speed. Overturning was the first harmful event in just 1.87 percent of all Oklahoma crashes in 2024, yet those crashes were 10.74 percent of the fatal ones.4 Single-vehicle crashes tell the same story: 14.91 percent of all wrecks and 29.19 percent of the fatal ones.4
The kind of vehicle matters. IIHS reported that 6,250 passenger vehicle occupants were killed in rollover crashes in 2024, and the crash type fell hardest on taller vehicles. Rollovers were behind 33 percent of SUV occupant deaths and 38 percent of pickup occupant deaths, against 20 percent for cars.2 Ejection is a big part of why a roll turns fatal, since an unbelted occupant can be thrown from the vehicle as it turns over.2
Around Oklahoma City these cluster on high-speed pavement, especially the outer parkways and the ramps and curves where a single-vehicle run-off ends in a roll. The city's own Vision Zero analysis found that most of its fatal crashes happen on streets posted at 45 mph or higher, or on roads with poor lighting.5
The I-35/I-240 interchange, a hotspot with a paper trail
If one place in the metro has earned the hotspot label on the record, it is the I-35/I-240 interchange on the south side. ODOT's benefit-cost analysis for its planned rebuild counted 9,390 crashes in the interchange area between 2012 and 2021, an average of about 939 a year, including 12 fatal crashes.6 Rear-end collisions were 69 percent of them and sideswipes another 19 percent, with about a third tied to merging and diverging movements and a fifth to the ramps themselves.6
The cause is old geometry. Tight cloverleaf ramps and short weaving sections force drivers to brake and merge in the same few hundred feet, which is how sideswipes and chain rear-enders start.6 The rebuild also replaces the structurally deficient I-240 bridge that carries traffic over I-35, and construction is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and finish in 2028.6
What the city and state are doing, and what to do if it was you
Oklahoma City adopted its Vision Zero Action Plan on February 25, 2025, after traffic deaths in the city climbed 34 percent over five years.7 The plan takes on the 15 most dangerous streets and intersections first, paid for largely by about $1 million in federal transportation grants.7 Statewide the toll holds steady and grim. Oklahoma recorded 706 traffic deaths in 2023 and 710 in 2022,8 and in 2024 the state lost someone to a crash roughly every seven hours.4 Rough and unsafe roads add a cost even when they are not the direct cause; TRIP estimates the safety share alone runs the average Oklahoma City driver $471 a year.9

Get the official Oklahoma Traffic Collision Report from the agency that worked it, the Oklahoma City Police Department on city streets or the Oklahoma Highway Patrol on the interstates and turnpikes.
