Metro Phoenix and the high country around Prescott share one road network but not the same crash problem. In 2024, Arizona recorded 121,107 crashes, with 1,228 people killed and 54,426 injured.1 Maricopa County, which covers Phoenix and the rest of the Valley, accounted for 88,094 of those crashes and 594 of the deaths by itself.1 Yavapai County, home to Prescott and Prescott Valley, added 3,836 crashes and 63 deaths, and neighboring Gila County another 918 crashes.1
The three crash types in the title do not show up in the same places. T-bones pile up at the signalized intersections of the Valley grid. Rollovers and head-on collisions concentrate on the two-lane highways that climb north toward Prescott and the Mogollon Rim. Which one you are dealing with tells you a lot about where the fault and the evidence usually sit.
T-bone crashes and the Phoenix intersection grid
ADOT files what most people call a T-bone under "angle" collisions. In 2024 there were 18,182 angle crashes statewide, 17.64% of all multi-vehicle collisions, plus another 16,866 left-turn crashes at 16.37%.1 Together, those two intersection movements make up about a third of every multi-car crash in the state.
Left turns are the quiet danger. Angle crashes were the manner of collision in 96 fatal wrecks in 2024, but left-turn crashes accounted for 127 fatal ones, more than any other vehicle-to-vehicle movement, head-ons and rear-enders included.1 A driver turning left across oncoming traffic misjudges the gap, and the car going straight hits the turning vehicle broadside.
Phoenix has mapped where this happens. The city's Road Safety Action Plan studied 5,473 crashes that killed or seriously injured someone between 2016 and 2020.2 Forty-three percent of those crashes happened at signalized intersections, and 12% of them clustered at fewer than 6% of the city's traffic signals.2 A small number of crossings carry a large share of the harm.
The plan names them. On its high-injury network, left-turn and angle crashes dominate specific intersections: 63% of the crashes at 75th Avenue and Indian School Road were left-turns, along with 56% at 7th Avenue and Bell Road and 56% at Greenway Parkway and Cave Creek Road.2 At 51st Avenue and Thunderbird Road the mix was 44% left-turn and 44% angle.2 These are ordinary Valley arterials, not obscure back roads. The city put the cost of the killed and seriously injured crashes on its high-injury network at $2.75 billion for 2016 through 2020.2 Phoenix set targets to cut those crashes 25% by 2027 and 60% by 2035, on the way to zero deaths by 2050.2
Head-on crashes are rare but disproportionately deadly
Head-on crashes almost never show up in the totals. There were 2,023 of them in 2024, under 2% of all multi-vehicle crashes.1 Yet they were the manner of collision in 83 fatal wrecks, 10.49% of every deadly multi-vehicle crash that year.1 The year before ran nearly the same: 2,063 head-ons at 2.00% of the total, but 110 fatal crashes and 12.54% of the deadly ones.3 Two cars closing on each other combine their speeds, so the crash energy is far higher than a rear-end at the same posted limit.
In the metro core the worst version is the wrong-way driver on the freeway, usually impaired and moving against traffic on I-17 or one of the loops. ADOT built a detection system to catch them. Its I-17 pilot placed 90 thermal cameras along the stretch between the I-10 "Stack" interchange downtown and the Loop 101 in north Phoenix, running since January 2018.4 More than 100 wrong-way vehicles set off its alerts, and most of those drivers turned around on an off-ramp or pulled off before reaching oncoming traffic.4 The pilot cost about $4 million through Proposition 400.4
Out on the rural routes toward Prescott, head-ons come from a driver drifting across the centerline on a road with no median. ADOT's fix there is low-tech. In spring 2024 it cut centerline rumble strips into State Route 89 between Paulden and Ash Fork, a 24-mile stretch from milepost 339 to 363 in Yavapai County, and added fresh pavement markings.5 The strips throw noise and vibration into the cab the instant a tire crosses the center line, which is the split second that decides whether a drowsy or distracted driver drifts into a truck.
Rollovers belong to the rural highways
Overturning was the first harmful event in 2,264 crashes in 2024.1 That is just 1.87% of all crashes, but 10.74% of the fatal ones.1 A rollover is far more likely to kill the people inside than a routine fender-to-fender collision.
Where they happen is the real story for this market. Of those 2,264 rollovers, 1,459 (close to two-thirds) occurred in rural areas, and rural rollovers killed 94 people against 34 in urban areas.1 That fits the wider split: rural roads saw only 13% of Arizona crashes in 2024 but 34% of the fatal ones.1 The long grades of I-17 north of Black Canyon City, State Route 69 into Prescott Valley, and SR 89 and 89A through the mountains are the high-speed, run-off-road settings where a vehicle trips and rolls.
The type of vehicle matters too. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety found that rollovers accounted for 28% of all passenger-vehicle occupant deaths in 2024, and the share climbed with ride height: 33% for SUVs and 38% for pickups, against 20% for cars.6 In single-vehicle crashes, 47% of occupant deaths involved a rollover.6 Arizona's own numbers line up. Single-vehicle crashes were 14.91% of all crashes in 2024 but 29.19% of the fatal ones.1
What the pattern means if you were just hit
The three crash types point to different evidence. A T-bone at a Valley intersection usually turns on right-of-way and signal timing, so the police diagram and any nearby camera footage carry the case. A head-on or rollover on a rural highway turns on lane position and road condition, where ADOT's route records and the responding agency's report matter most. On those rural routes the report often comes from the Department of Public Safety or a county sheriff rather than a city police department.
Get the crash report and write down the exact location, the milepost or the nearest cross streets, while it is fresh.
