Rollover, T-bone and head-on hotspots across the Raleigh, Durham and Fayetteville market
Most crashes leave you rattled and nothing worse. Three kinds do the real damage. A rollover, a T-bone (what the crash report calls an angle collision), and a head-on are the wrecks that put people in trauma bays across Wake, Durham and Cumberland counties. Where they happen is not random. They cluster on a handful of corridors, and the agencies that patrol and rebuild those roads have the crash data to show it.

Why these three crashes hurt the most
Speed and geometry decide how badly a wreck injures you. A rear-end bump at a red light is usually survivable. A vehicle tipping onto its roof, a bumper driving into your door, or two cars meeting grille to grille at highway speed sit in a different tier.
Rollovers are uncommon but brutal. Across the country, a rollover was the most harmful event in 28 percent of all passenger-vehicle occupant deaths in 2023, even though rollovers make up a small share of crashes overall.1 Height is the risk factor: 38 percent of pickup occupants and 33 percent of SUV occupants killed that year were in a vehicle that had rolled.1 Head-on crashes carry comparable weight. The Federal Highway Administration counts a head-on as the most harmful event in roughly 14 percent of U.S. traffic deaths each year, and in 27 percent of all roadway-departure deaths.2 Angle crashes, the T-bones, are the intersection killer. The struck driver or passenger takes the blow on a door, with only inches of metal between the striking bumper and a human body.
North Carolina tracks with the national picture. NCDOT reported that statewide crashes climbed 3.8 percent in 2023 over the year before, with speeding a factor in 23.1 percent of traffic deaths.3
T-bone country: the surface intersections
Angle crashes happen where two streams of traffic cross, so the hotspots are signalized surface intersections and driveways, not freeway ramps. Fayetteville's Safe Streets and Roads for All plan found angle crashes to be one of the three most common crash types in the city, alongside pedestrian and run-off-road wrecks.4 The risk is concentrated: about 2 percent of the city's intersections account for roughly 42 percent of its fatal and serious-injury crashes, and 8 percent of road miles carry about 76 percent of them.4 From 2019 through 2023, Fayetteville recorded 675 crashes that killed or seriously injured someone.4
Two Fayetteville arterials stand out. A review of federal fatality data ranked a 4.9-mile stretch of Cliffdale Road, from Beverly Drive to Lansdowne Road, the deadliest road segment in North Carolina, with 10 fatal crashes and 11 deaths between 2018 and 2020.5 Raeford Road is the other. A 2010 NCDOT study measured a crash rate of 727 wrecks per 100 million vehicle miles on the corridor, nearly double the statewide average of 395 for similar roads, and found 78 percent of crashes happened between intersections, where drivers cut across several lanes to turn left through oncoming traffic.6 NCDOT is now spending $147.8 million to rebuild 6.3 miles of Raeford Road with a raised median and reduced-conflict intersections, a design that turns those left turns into a right turn followed by a U-turn and removes the crossing movement that produces T-bones.76 The Raeford Road and Skibo Road junction falls inside that work.6
Raleigh has its own problem corners. NCDOT's statewide ranking put Buffaloe Road at New Hope Road as the most dangerous intersection in Raleigh and 23rd in the state, and Capital Boulevard at Calvary Drive as first in North Carolina for pedestrian and bicycle crashes.8 The city has already rebuilt Forestville Road at Louisburg Road (U.S. 401) as a reduced-conflict intersection after years of serious and deadly crashes; left-turning drivers now turn right first and loop back through a marked U-turn, an approach the Federal Highway Administration endorses.910 FHWA lists reduced left-turn conflict intersections among its Proven Safety Countermeasures and credits them with cutting fatal and injury crashes by more than half at treated locations.11
Sheer crash volume points somewhere else. When WRAL Investigates pulled NCDOT data for the first seven months of 2025 and counted every crash within 150 feet of an intersection, Wake County's top spots were all freeway interchanges: I-40 at Aviation Parkway with 44 crashes, I-440 at Capital Boulevard with 41, and I-440 at Glenwood Avenue with 38.12 Those are mostly rear-end and sideswipe wrecks in heavy merges. The T-bone danger sits a level below, at the busy signalized crossings where turning traffic meets cross traffic.
Rollover corridors: rural two-lanes and interstate ramps
A rollover doesn't need a second vehicle. Most begin when a car or truck drifts off the pavement, catches a curb, ditch or soft shoulder, and trips onto its side. That is why Fayetteville's plan lists run-off-road crashes among its leading types,4 and why the risk rises on the market's rural edges in Harnett, Johnston, Sampson and outer Cumberland counties, where two-lane state roads carry highway speeds without medians or wide shoulders.
What you drive changes the odds. Pickups and SUVs sit higher and tip more readily, so they make up the biggest share of rollover deaths, and this fast-growing metro's fleet leans heavily toward both.1 Interstate ramps are a quieter hazard. The banked loop ramps of the I-40, I-440 and I-540 system around Raleigh and the I-95 interchanges near Fayetteville punish drivers who enter too fast, and a top-heavy pickup or loaded box truck that runs wide can go over.
The market's heavy-truck corridor is I-95 through Cumberland County, where speed and freight volume turn ordinary mistakes into multi-vehicle disasters. Just after 2 a.m. on March 1, 2026, a five-vehicle wreck near mile marker 62 involving a pickup, two SUVs, an Amazon truck and a fully loaded charter bus killed one person and closed every northbound lane for hours, according to the State Highway Patrol.13
Head-on stretches: the rural undivided roads
Head-on crashes are the signature wreck of the two-lane road. Federal researchers find opposite-direction fatal crashes happen overwhelmingly on undivided rural roads posted at 50 mph or higher, and that most roadway-departure deaths occur outside cities.2 Inside this market that describes long segments of US-401, US-1, NC-24, NC-87 and NC-210 running through the countryside between the cities, where a moment of drift or an impaired driver crossing the center line meets oncoming traffic with no barrier in between.
Divided highways like I-40 and I-95 mostly prevent true head-ons, except when a driver enters going the wrong way. The fix on rural two-lanes is unglamorous: center-line rumble strips and wider shoulders, both of which NCDOT and FHWA treat as proven ways to keep drivers out of the oncoming lane.
What the cities are doing about it
All three anchor cities run Vision Zero programs built on the same finding, that a small fraction of streets carries most of the harm. Durham adopted a Vision Zero Action Plan for 2025 through 2029 and mapped a High Injury Network where about 10 percent of the city's roads, roughly 130 centerline miles, account for 74 percent of fatal and serious-injury crashes; on average about 23 people die on Durham roads each year.14 WRAL's 2025 data showed Durham's highest-crash intersections clustered on the interstates, led by I-40 at NC 55 with 28 crashes, I-85 at Avondale Drive with 25, and I-85 at Roxboro Street and NC 54 at NC 55 with 23 each.15 Raleigh's Vision Zero data recorded 59 traffic deaths in 2022 from 53 fatal crashes, with 51 of those deaths on NCDOT-maintained roads, and notes that a person struck at 40 mph faces roughly an 80 percent chance of dying.16 Fayetteville is drafting its own action plan around the 8-percent-of-roads pattern its crash review turned up.4

Get checked by a doctor even if you feel fine, because internal and spinal injuries from these crashes often surface hours later. Ask the responding State Highway Patrol trooper or local officer for the crash report number before you leave; the NCDOT crash report drives both the statistics above and any claim you file. Photograph the vehicles, the intersection or roadway, and any skid marks or signals while they are fresh. Angle and head-on cases often turn on who had the right of way or who crossed the line, and rollover cases can involve road design or a vehicle defect, so those details carry weight.
