Rollover, T-bone, and head-on hotspots in the Bay Area
Rollovers, T-bones, and head-on collisions are the crashes that put people in a trauma bay. They don't spread evenly across the San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose metro. They concentrate on a short list of freeways, ramps, and intersections that local agencies already track by name. Knowing where and why these crashes happen won't undo one, but it explains a lot about how yours occurred and who might be at fault.
Each type has its own geography. Broadside crashes belong to intersections. Head-on crashes happen on freeways and a few undivided arterials. Rollovers show up on ramps, curves, and open highway. Here's what the local data shows.
T-bone crashes cluster at intersections
A T-bone, or broadside, is one vehicle hitting the side of another. It almost always happens at an intersection where a driver ran a red light or turned across oncoming traffic. Side impacts were tied to 22% of U.S. passenger-vehicle occupant deaths in 2024, second only to frontal crashes.1 The problem is physics: a door and a pillar are the only things between you and the other car's bumper, so a broadside injures people at speeds a rear-end collision would shrug off.
Every big Bay Area city keeps a map of where these pile up. In Oakland, roughly 6% of street miles account for about 63% of the city's severe and fatal crashes.2 A 2024 review of Oakland's worst intersections flagged MacArthur Boulevard at 94th Avenue, San Pablo Avenue at 34th Street, where one person was killed, and Broadway at 24th Street, where two died.2 The city recorded 2,013 people killed or injured in reported collisions in 2023 and ranked worst among comparable California cities for hit-and-run, with 499 such crashes.3 Thirty-three people died on its streets that year.4
San Francisco's pattern is even tighter. The city's 2024 High Injury Network, released by Mayor Daniel Lurie, found that about 13% of streets carry 74% of the most severe crashes.5 SFMTA counts roughly 30 traffic deaths and more than 500 severe injuries in a typical year.6 Stretches newly flagged as dangerous include Fulton Street between Fourth and Seventh avenues and the Embarcadero from Howard Street to Pier 40.5
San Jose runs the same idea through 17 Priority Safety Corridors, among them First Street and Monterey Road, Senter Road, Story Road, King Road, and Capitol Expressway. In 2018 those corridors accounted for 55% of the city's traffic deaths and 38% of its severe injuries.7 City figures put the corridors at about 3% of roadway miles carrying 30 to 40% of fatal and serious crashes each year.8 The state tallied San Jose at 3,294 people killed or injured in 2023, including 642 speed-related collisions.9
Head-on crashes and wrong-way drivers on Bay Area freeways
Head-on collisions are less common than broadsides but much harder to survive. Frontal impacts were linked to 59% of passenger-vehicle occupant deaths nationally in 2024.1 Around here, the deadliest version is a driver going the wrong way on a freeway.
The scale of it shows up in single weekends. Over two days in April 2023, four people died in four separate wrong-way crashes on Bay Area freeways: two on Highway 237 in Sunnyvale, one on Interstate 280 in Woodside, and one on U.S. 101 in San Rafael. Alcohol or DUI was suspected in most of them.10 That tracks with the national picture. The National Transportation Safety Board found wrong-way collisions are far more likely to be deadly than other crashes, and that alcohol impairment is a factor in about 60% of the fatal ones.11
Caltrans District 4, which runs Bay Area state highways, is adding red retroreflective pavement markers, radar detection, and lit signs to freeway off-ramps to stop wrong-way entries.12 The work grew out of a Caltrans and UC Davis pilot that cut wrong-way drivers by 44% in San Diego with reflective markers alone. The state loses an average of 37 people a year to wrong-way crashes.13
Head-on risk isn't only a freeway thing. Undivided arterials with fast traffic and heavy turning movements produce them too. Monterey Road in San Jose, one of the city's high-fatality corridors, is a long, wide street where drivers pick up speed, and it's been a repeated target for safety work.14
Rollovers happen on ramps, curves, and open highway
Rollovers are mostly a single-vehicle story. A driver takes a curve or an off-ramp too fast, over-corrects, catches a guardrail or a soft shoulder, and the vehicle trips and flips. Nationally, rollovers were involved in 28% of passenger-vehicle occupant deaths in 2024, and the share climbs to 33% for SUVs, which ride higher and tip more easily.1 In California, overturned crashes made up 10.3% of speeding-related fatal and serious-injury crashes in 2021, just behind broadsides.15
The local rollover map runs along the region's fastest edge highways and its ramps. On Interstate 580 through the Altamont Pass in eastern Alameda County, a minivan went through a guardrail and rolled more than 100 feet down an embankment, killing a passenger.16 Closer in, a driver died when her car flipped and landed upside down as she tried to exit I-580 onto Highway 13 in Oakland; she wasn't belted.17 On an Interstate 680 off-ramp in Pleasant Hill, an SUV lost control up an embankment and overturned, and the unbelted driver was ejected.18 The common thread in fatal rollovers is speed plus a missing seat belt, because a flipping vehicle throws unrestrained occupants toward the roof and out the windows.
What the local agencies track
If you're piecing together a crash, several public bodies hold the records. The SFMTA and the San Francisco Department of Public Health build that city's crash maps from hospital, police, and coroner data.6 OakDOT runs Oakland's Safe Oakland Streets program and its high-injury network.2 San Jose's Department of Transportation manages the Vision Zero corridors.7 The California Highway Patrol investigates freeway crashes and feeds the statewide SWITRS database, and the California Office of Traffic Safety publishes the annual city rankings that show how each metro compares.9
If a rollover, T-bone, or head-on crash happened to you
These crashes usually have a clear cause and often a clearly responsible driver, whether that's someone who ran a red light or someone who came at you going the wrong way. Get the CHP or police report number, photograph the scene and the vehicles if you can do it safely, and see a doctor even if you feel fine, because side-impact and rollover injuries can surface days later.
