Wendell was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from Samford University in 1983 where he served on the Student Government Body and was a member of the Lamda Chi Alpha social fraternity. He earned his J.D. Degree from Cumberland School of Law in 1986 where he excelled in its trial program. Upon graduation he joined the firm of Sheffield & Sheffield, P.C..
