Case Details
A Hartford jury awarded $15.7 million to plaintiffs following a month-long trial for a 2007 accident on Interstate 95. A 78,000-pound tanker with faulty brakes, driven by a person with methadone in his system, caused the crash, killing three people and badly injuring three others. The jury found the tanker driver and his employer, Northeast Carriers, at fault.
Additional Notes
The plaintiffs will pursue assets from the parent company, Saveway Petroleum, to cover the full verdict as Northeast Carriers had limited insurance. Individual awards were also made to the estates of Fred Held ($3,210,000) and LuAnn Dugas ($3,673,100), and to injured parties James Clark ($5,575,000), Samira Clough ($2,218,000), and Lynn Mariani ($1,069,500). Southbay Trucking was awarded $50,000 for vehicle damages.
