When Crashes Happen

The temporal patterns of crashes remained broadly consistent year-over-year, with some minor shifts. Friday continued to be the peak day for crashes in both 2020 (4,188 crashes) and 2021 (4,908 crashes). The peak hour for collisions shifted slightly later in the day, from the 3 p.m. hour in 2020 (2,045 crashes) to the 4 p.m. hour in 2021 (2,391 crashes).

Crash Severity Breakdown

While the absolute number of fatal and injury crashes increased, their proportion relative to all crashes shifted. The fatal crash rate per 100 crashes decreased slightly from 0.32 in 2020 to 0.29 in 2021. Road & Environmental Conditions

The distribution of crashes across different environmental conditions saw minimal change between 2020 and 2021. The vast majority of incidents in both years occurred in clear weather (82.0% in 2021 vs. 81.1% in 2020) and during daylight hours (67.8% in 2021 vs. 66.4% in 2020). Vehicles & Demographics

The composition of vehicles and persons involved in crashes showed consistency between the two periods. Speed Limit Zones

While the 25 mph speed zone continued to have the highest number of crashes in both years (11,110 in 2021), there was a notable increase in crashes in higher speed zones. Crashes in 55 mph zones rose by 62.7% from 2,011 to 3,272, and incidents in 65 mph zones increased by 42.6% from 905 to 1,291. The fatality rate was highest in the 50 mph zone in 2021 at 1.30%, an increase from 0.92% in the prior year for that same speed bracket.

This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.
