When Crashes Happen
The temporal patterns of crashes showed some shifts between February 2020 and February 2021. The peak day for crashes moved from Friday (1,429 crashes) in the prior period to Thursday (1,195 crashes) in the current period. While the 3 p.m. hour remained the most frequent time for collisions in both periods, the number of crashes during this peak hour decreased from 647 to 591.

Crash Severity Breakdown
Crash severity decreased in February 2021 compared to the previous year. The fatal crash rate fell from 0.26% to 0.19% of all crashes. Road & Environmental Conditions
Environmental conditions differed significantly between the two periods, largely driven by weather. In February 2021, there were 1,629 crashes in snowy conditions and 547 on icy roads, compared to just 37 and 81, respectively, in February 2020. Consequently, collisions on dry road surfaces fell from 5,718 to 3,546. The number of crashes in daylight remained stable at approximately 4,730 for both periods, while crashes in dark-lighted conditions decreased from 2,090 to 1,735.

Vehicles & Demographics
The most common vehicle makes involved in crashes remained consistent year-over-year, with Honda, Toyota, and Ford being the top three in both February 2020 and February 2021. The number of vehicles from these top makes involved in crashes generally decreased, such as Honda which dropped from 1,602 to 1,458. An analysis of persons involved shows a demographic shift, with the proportion of individuals aged 65 and older decreasing from 9.4% to 7.8% of all persons involved.

Speed Limit Zones
The distribution of crashes across speed zones shows a larger decrease in higher speed zones. Collisions in zones of 50-60 mph dropped from 786 to 582, while crashes in zones of 25 mph or less remained stable at around 3,550. Fatality rates within specific zones also shifted; in 40-45 mph zones, there were 8 fatal crashes in February 2020 compared to only 2 in February 2021. The fatality rate in the 65 mph zone remained nearly unchanged, with 3 fatal crashes recorded in both periods.

This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.
