When Crashes Happen
The temporal patterns of crashes remained consistent year-over-year, with the peak day for collisions holding steady on Friday and the peak hour remaining at 4 p.m. in both periods. However, the volume of crashes during these peak times increased substantially in July 2021. Crashes on Friday rose from 1,268 to 1,722, and incidents during the 4 p.m. hour increased from 578 to 721.

Crash Severity Breakdown
Although the absolute number of fatal crashes increased from 26 to 30 year-over-year, the fatal crash rate as a percentage of all crashes saw a slight decrease from 0.37% to 0.34%. The proportion of crashes resulting in any type of injury (serious, minor, or possible) also declined, accounting for 26.0% of all incidents in July 2021 compared to 27.5% in July 2020. Road & Environmental Conditions
There was a notable shift toward more crashes occurring in adverse weather and road conditions in July 2021 compared to the previous year. The proportion of crashes taking place on wet road surfaces more than doubled, increasing from 8.8% of all crashes in July 2020 to 18.8% in July 2021. Vehicles & Demographics
The makes of vehicles most frequently involved in crashes remained consistent, with Honda, Ford, and Toyota being the top three in both July 2021 and July 2020. The age demographics of persons involved in collisions also showed little change year-over-year. For example, individuals in the 26-34 age group represented 17.8% of all persons involved in the current period, a figure nearly identical to the 17.1% recorded in the prior period.

Speed Limit Zones
Year-over-year, crashes increased across most speed zones, with significant growth in higher-speed areas. Collisions in 55 mph zones rose from 511 to 858, and those in 65 mph zones increased from 295 to 492. Despite the higher volume of crashes in these zones, the fatality rate within the 55 mph zone decreased from 0.78% to 0.47%. Conversely, the fatality rate in 65 mph zones increased from zero to 0.61% with 3 fatal crashes recorded.
