When Crashes Happen

The temporal patterns of crashes showed some shifts between October 2021 and October 2022. While the most dangerous hour remained the 3 PM hour in both periods (841 crashes in 2021 vs. 791 in 2022), the peak day for crashes moved from Friday (1,950 crashes) in 2021 to Saturday (1,548 crashes) in 2022. Crash Severity Breakdown

Road & Environmental Conditions

The distribution of crashes across different environmental conditions remained largely unchanged year-over-year. In both October 2022 and October 2021, approximately 79% of crashes occurred in clear weather and on dry road surfaces. Crashes in rainy conditions accounted for 13.7% of the total in the current period, a slight decrease from 15.2% in the prior year. Vehicles & Demographics

The makes of vehicles involved in crashes showed consistency year-over-year, with Honda, Toyota, and Ford remaining the top three most frequently involved makes in both October 2022 and October 2021. Analysis of persons involved shows a relatively stable age distribution, although the proportion of individuals aged 16-20 decreased from 10.3% of all persons in the prior period to 9.3% in the current period. The 26-34 age group remained the largest single cohort involved in crashes in both years, at approximately 17% of the total.

Speed Limit Zones

While the number of crashes in zones posted at 25 mph or less remained stable, collisions in higher speed zones saw a general decrease from October 2021 to October 2022. For instance, crashes in 50-55 mph zones fell from 1,450 to 1,221. Despite this, the rate of fatal crashes within specific speed zones shifted; the fatality rate in 25 mph zones increased from 0.11% to 0.40%. Furthermore, zones posted at 65 mph, which had zero fatal crashes in the prior period, recorded 6 fatal crashes in October 2022, representing 1.1% of all crashes in that speed zone.

All crash data in this report is sourced from Connecticut Crash Data, accessed programmatically via the Csv Open Data API (SODA). This dataset contains official police-reported motor vehicle traffic crash records maintained by the reporting jurisdiction's law enforcement agency. Records are published to the open data portal by the municipality and are subject to the portal's terms of use.
