When Crashes Happen

The temporal patterns of crashes remained broadly consistent year-over-year, with Wednesday being the peak day for crashes in both September 2021 (1,706 crashes) and September 2020 (1,200 crashes). However, the peak hour for collisions shifted slightly later, moving from the 3 PM hour in 2020 (628 crashes) to the 4 PM hour in 2021 (821 crashes). Road & Environmental Conditions

The majority of crashes in both periods occurred in clear weather on dry roads. However, September 2021 saw a notable increase in the proportion of crashes under adverse conditions compared to the previous year. Crashes during rain increased from 7.0% of the total in 2020 to 12.2% in 2021, and incidents on wet roads rose from 9.1% to 15.5% of all crashes. Speed Limit Zones

Crashes increased across nearly all posted speed limit zones in September 2021 compared to the prior year. There was a substantial rise in incidents in higher speed zones; crashes in 55 mph zones increased from 569 to 1,034, and those in 65 mph zones rose from 305 to 540.
