Case Details
A jury ordered Norfolk Southern Corp. to pay Allan Couch, a former brakeman, $2.6 million after he sued, claiming the noise of locomotives and train whistles caused persistent roaring in his ears (tinnitus), leading to deep depression and psychosis. He worked for the railroad from 1970 to 1992.
Additional Notes
Attorneys for Allan Couch: Willard J. Moody, Sr. Railroad lawyers argued Couch was mentally ill. Railroad knew of noise dangers but didn't require ear protection until 1990.
