About Thomas
Thomas Zapata, born and raised in a small South Texas town, learned resilience and determination after losing his vision at 17. He finished high school at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, earned his B.A. in Politics and Law from The University of Texas at San Antonio (Summa Cum Laude, Pi Sigma Alpha), and his J.D. from The University of Texas School of Law (Hook ’em!). During law school, he was a staff editor for the American Journal of Criminal Law and took numerous courtroom advocacy classes. He served as a student attorney in the Disability Rights Clinic, advocating for K-12 students with disabilities, and in the Criminal Defense Clinic, handling cases from DWIs to indecent assault. He interned at Cofer & Connelly for two summers, assisting with misdemeanors, felonies, and appeals. As a first-generation college student, his family is his greatest inspiration, and his drive to represent the vulnerable stems from his own experiences advocating as a person with a disability. In his free time, he plays guitar, adds to his bourbon and cigar collection, and cheers on the Longhorns.
