She attended both Rend Lake Community College and Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, pursuing an undergraduate degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice. Following her bachelor’s degree, she attended Southern Illinois University School of Law, where she obtained her juris doctor, graduating cum laude in May 2017. During the early years of Chelbie’s career, she practiced personal injury defense in the metro-east area, focusing primarily on auto accident litigation. Her passion for service in her community brought her back to the Mt. Vernon area in early 2019. While attending Southern Illinois University School of Law, Chelbie was the commentary managing editor of the Journal of Legal Medicine and a Taylor Mattis Fellow. The Journal of Legal Medicine published Chelbie’s commentary titled, From Dark Dens to Suburban Townhouses: Creating a Centralized System for Prescription Opiate Monitoring to Combat the Addiction Epidemic in the United States, in 2018. She worked as a research assistant and co-author on the Health Care Legal Newsletter for the Illinois State Bar Association for about two years as well. She also received a specialization in Health Law and Policy. During her education, Chelbie spent some time in various legal offices and courthouses throughout Southern Illinois.
