Steven J. Anglés
Seattle, WA
I was in my teens when my family moved from Miami to a small town. We clearly weren’t from around there and didn’t exactly get a kind welcome. It didn’t take long to figure out that using my brain and building relationships were my best shot for some peace and happiness. Once I made some good friends, it became clear how much of a difference it made knowing that someone had my back. I wanted to be that person for others so they never had to feel like I did. What seemed like a seismic uprooting, as a kid, was small compared to my family fleeing Cuba in the ‘50s. They left their homes, jobs, and family to start over with a few, small suitcases and a whole lot of determination in a country where they didn’t speak the language or understand the system. Rightly, I was expected to work hard make sure their sacrifices continued to be meaningful, so I studied non-stop so I could begin making a real difference as fast as possible. When the first semester of law school finals came around and overlapped with my college graduation, I skipped the ceremony without hesitation. While these experiences are personal, I’m sharing them because they helped shape who I am and I think it’s really important for clients to know what motivates anyone they choose to represent them. Still in school, I started working for the D.A. prosecuting criminals and protecting victims of domestic violence. Keeping with my pattern, before I’d gotten my bar results; I began working at Progressive Insurance. I put myself through college and law school, so not only did I need to repay my loans but I also wanted to start honing my skills in the courtroom. My job was to represent the insured person, but at the end of the day, my boss was really the insurance corporation. Despite my track record of exceptional verdicts and well over a hundred cases that I took to trial, eventually I found myself at odds with my own company almost as often as I fought opposing council. I’d built up highly specialized knowledge of the industry but knew I couldn’t keep working there. I wanted to shift from defense work (tearing down other people’s cases) to personal injury work (building people’s cases). You might say that I understand how hard it can be to find the right attorneys. It took me a year of searching and another year getting to know the attorneys at Adler Giersch before making the transition. After 24 years of practice, I’m honored to be a partner at AG, working with a team who shares the same values: honoring and supporting our clients and the tireless pursuit of great results. I work across the Pacific Northwest, in Seattle and Bellevue and manage a dedicated office in Kent to serve the South Sound community.
