About Matt

Before joining Hutton & Hutton, Matt was an Assistant District Attorney for the 18th Judicial District of Sedgwick County, Kansas for over a decade. During his tenure, he prosecuted felony cases ranging from Attempted Capital Murder and First-Degree Murder to the Manufacturing and Distribution of illegal narcotics. Matt worked closely with multi-agency law enforcement teams to prosecute gang activity, largescale burglary and theft operations, and complex criminal organizations. He also litigated civil asset forfeiture cases, assisted with search warrants and wire intercepts, and handled immigration-related issues in felony prosecutions. Known for his tenacity and persuasive courtroom presence, Matt developed a reputation as a tough-minded trial attorney. By the end of 2019, he had successfully tried over 60 cases and argued numerous others before the district court, Kansas Court of Appeals, and Kansas Supreme Court. In recognition of his service and skill, Matt received two commendations from the Wichita Police Department: the Certification of Appreciation in 2011 and the Bronze Wreath of Merit in 2019. Matt’s connection to Hutton & Hutton began personally in 2016, when his parents were represented by the firm following a catastrophic motor vehicle accident. Deeply impressed by the compassionate and aggressive representation his family received, Matt later joined the firm in 2019. As a civil trial lawyer, Matt brings the same dedication he once applied to criminal prosecutions to advocating for victims of negligence, catastrophic injury, and civil rights violations. Shortly after joining the firm, he was appointed co-lead counsel in the national opioid litigation on behalf of the City of Wichita, which resulted in a multi-million dollar recovery for the city and local community. That same year, he was invited to speak at the Kansas Addiction and Recovery Conference. In 2021, Matt represented an injured United States Army Sergeant in a military medical malpractice claim against the United States Army. By mid-2024, under the new Military Claims Act, less than 3% of these claims had been approved, with the United States Army approving only 12 claims in the entire country. Through Matt’s zealous advocacy, his client’s claim was one of the 12. In 2022, Matt litigated one of Kansas’s first few wrongful conviction compensation claims, securing relief for Larry L. Lucas, who was wrongfully imprisoned under a law later deemed unconstitutional. Matt has successfully litigated cases involving wrongful death, medical malpractice, surgical errors, amputations, optometry malpractice, dental malpractice, pharmaceutical products, nursing home negligence, school liability, harassment and bullying claims, security breaches, §1983 claims, civil rights violations, sexual abuse of minors, sexual abuse of prisoners, elder sexual abuse, car wrecks, train collisions, semi-truck collisions, the Kansas Tort Claims Act, the Federal Tort Claims Act, and the Military Claims Act. He has recovered millions of dollars for clients across Kansas and surrounding states and was named to the 2023 National Trial Lawyers: Top 100. A Wichita native, Matt considers it an honor to advocate for members of his home community.
